Embroidery Hoop Coasters

Free project instructions to make an embroidered snowflake wall hanging

Embroidery and a bit of faux fur transform a hand embroidery hoop into a lovely coaster, ready to add a cool touch to any table.

These coasters are so attractive you can make as many as you like, then arrange them on the wall (use the hand-screws as hangers), or along a table runner as festive winter decor.

Supplies needed (for one coaster):

**Wooden or plastic hand embroidery hoop (mine is 5" in diameter)

**Small piece of cotton fabric (for embroidered front -- I used denim)

**Small piece of felt (for back)

**18" long by 1 1/4" wide piece of fur trim (my trim had about 1/4" long fur)

Supplies continued:

**Medium weight cutaway stabilizer

**Temporary spray adhesive

**Air-erase pen

**Pinking shears

**Fabric glue

**Tape measure

Special project notes:

I used a 5" hand embroidery hoop for my coasters (this size works well with the 4x4 size designs). These instructions will work with any size hoop, so choose any size you like.

Designs used:

I used the small sizes of the Delft Blue Snowflake 1, Delft Blue Snowflake 2, Delft Blue Snowflake 3, and Delft Blue Snowflake 4. Choose any designs or motif you like to decorate your coasters! Designs from the Woodland Tea Party Design Pack, the Creative Filigree Design Pack, and the Cupcake Love Design Pack would all be fabulous on these coasters.

To begin, cut a piece of cotton fabric (I used denim) a bit larger than your machine embroidery hoop. Lay the hand embroidery hoop on top of the fabric. With an air-erase pen or other marking tool, trace the inside of the hoop.

Remove the hoop. Create a paper template of the design by printing it at full size using embroidery software. If you haven't worked with templates to position designs before, see these step-by-step instructions for more information about making and using templates.

Place the template within the shape, and center it side to side and top to bottom by measuring equal distances in between the center point on the template and the side edges of the shape.

Make sure the design fits well within the shape: there should be at least 1/2" space in between the outer edges of the design and the edges of the shape. Poke a hole in the center of the template and mark the fabric. Also, mark the horizontal and vertical axis points.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks.

Next, spray a piece of medium weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Using your machine embroidery hoop, hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly aligned with the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design.

After the embroidery is finished, cut out the shape. I left the stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery to help give the fabric more support.

To prepare the back fabric, cut a piece of felt about 2" larger (on all sides) than the embroidered front piece. Center the embroidered front piece on top of the felt and pin in place.

Sew a zigzag stitch around the entire outer edge of the shape.

Lay the fabric flat with the embroidered side facing up. Hoop the fabric inside the hand embroidery hoop, with the screw at the top of the design and the embroidered front piece centered within the hoop. Hand-tighten the hoop to secure it.

Trim away the felt with pinking shears, leaving about 1/2" excess behind.

To prepare the faux fur trim, measure the circumference of the hand embroidery hoop with a measuring tape. (My hoop is 18" in circumference). Then, take the circumference measurement (which will be the length of the trim) by 1 1/4" wide and cut a piece of fur trim to that size. Align the long edges together, wrong sides together, and pin in place. Zigzag stitch along the long raw edges to create a "straw".

To add the trim to the embroidery hoop, use fabric glue along the outer sides of the hoop and press the fur trim in place, starting and ending at the hand screw at the top, with the seamed edge of the trim facing to the back of the coaster. And your coaster is complete!
