This design features two freestanding lace flower options.

There is a spiral flower (file "b") which can either be sewn (left) or hot glued (middle).

The second option is a flat, freestanding lace flower (file "c") which requires no assembly (right).

The flat flower (file "c") embroiders onto water-soluble stabilizer following the same steps as the spiral flower (file "b") shown below.

Begin by embroidering the "a" file onto your project fabric. We recommend using a medium weight cutaway stabilizer, adhered to the back of your fabric with temporary spray adhesive.

Hoop both fabric and stabilizer together taut for best results. When finished embroidering, carefully remove the excess stabilizer by cutting around the back of the embroidery. Set aside.

Freestanding lace designs have been specially digitized for water-soluble stabilizer. After the stabilizer is removed, beautiful embroidery remains.

There are a couple of different kinds of water-soluble stabilizer. One is clear and plastic, and that brand is Sulky Ultra Solvy. The other is soft and fibrous, called Vilene. Both will work very well. Vilene is used in this demonstration.

Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle. A sharp sewing needle has a smaller, finer point than an embroidery needle. That means it will make smaller holes in the stabilizer.

As the freestanding lace will be seen from both sides, wind a bobbin with the same thread that is being used in the top needle.

Hoop the stabilizer firmly. Make sure it is nice and tight with no wrinkles.

Attach the hoop to the machine, and load file "b" or file "c". For this demonstration we are sewing out file "b"; however, both will be used. Embroider the first piece using a matching bobbin.

After embroidering, trim away the excess stabilizer.

The stabilizer's packaging should give instructions for removing the excess. For Vilene, soak the embroidered lace for a few moments.

Allow the lace to air dry, and then press it with a pressing cloth on top.

Repeat the steps above to embroider the rest of the lace pieces. For this demonstration there will be two flowers total - one of the "b" file and the "c" file.

To begin assemble the spiral flower, you can use a hand sewing needle and thread. Starting with the innermost portion of the spiral, begin to hand sew or glue to the bottom of the lace flower to itself.

Keeping the spiral flower's base tightly coiled, continue to attach the tail of the spiral flower to the center base.

Once the end of the spiral is reached, tack the tail down so it is flush with the bottom of the spiral flower's base.

With the flowers sewn out, it's time to attach them to the background embroidery.

There are no placement marks, because the final placement is up to you.

To attach the flowers to the background, begin by taking a flower, and adding glue on the base.

Place the first flower as desired on the design, and allow the glue to dry completely.
