Canister Wraps

Cheery checks deck out these simple and stylish canister wraps.

The clean styling of these plain canisters practically begged for decoration, so we were inspired to create a way to decorate them with embroidery.  I just love the Italian feel that these embroidered wraps bring to my kitchen. The effect is great, and makes me feel like I am cooking in a bistro!

Supplies needed:

  • A set of canisters - These are a set from Tupperware

  • 2/3 yard of fabric

  • 1 yard of 1/4 inch wide elastic

Embroidery Designs from Embroidery Library:

Measure the circumference of each canister.

Add 2 inches to each measurement.  This will be the width of each wrap piece.

The height of each wrap piece is 5 inches, but you can adjust it to accommodate the size of the embroidery and/or the height of your canisters.

Using your measurements, mark each rectangle onto the fabric piece, and embroider each design in the center of its respective rectangle.  We used cutaway stabilizer, with this quilter's cotton.

After the embroidery is completed, cut out each  piece.

Hem the long top and bottom edges of each wrap piece.  I used a 10mm hem.

Fold the wrap piece in half meeting the unhemmed short ends.  Stitch the ends together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Cut the elastic into eight 3-inch strips.

Stretching the elastic as you stitch, sew 2 strips of the elastic to the wrong side of each canister wrap.  The elastic pieces should be centered over the stitched seam, and when the elastic is allowed to relax, it will draw the fabric into 3 inches of gathers.  This will hold the fabric tightly to the sides of the canisters.

Slide the canister wraps onto each canister.  They look great on my counter, and I can easily make other sets to change them as I see fit for the seasons.

I just love how this extra punch of color brightens up the kitchen!
