A-lure-ing Wall Hanging
This rustic wall hanging is more than a little fishy. You'll be hooked on the look in no time! Fishing-themed designs and bobbers and lures make this three-dimensional wall hanging the catch of the day -- and an essential addition to a cabin or lake home. And it makes an a-lure-ing gift, too! Net your favorite designs, then dive down the page to see how to make this charming wall hanging!
Special Project Notes Designs Used To make my wall hanging, I stitched the 5"x7" size of the Peace Love Fish (Bobber) design, the medium size of Hooked on Fishing, the small size of the Bluegill Sketch, and the small size of the Largemouth Bass Sketch. The Happy Trails designs and the Intricate Ink Bass designs as well as the Bass Silhouette Scene, the Born to Fish, Forced to Work Sampler, and the Drop a Line - Stay Awhile design would all be great additions to a fishing-themed wall hanger. Finished SizeAbout 20" wide by 24" high. You can make your wall hanging any size you like.Note about the stick hanger I used: I started with a clean, dry stick. I then applied a couple coats of spray fixative to seal it. This helps prevent the bark from flaking off, and gives the wood a nice sheen. Fixative can be found at art supply and craft stores.
To begin, I will show you how to create a simple panel (no borders, just a front and a back). Cut a piece of fabric a bit larger than your hoop. Spray a piece of medium weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top (I am using twill and lightweight canvas). Hoop the fabric and the stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric.
Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design. Embroider the design. Next, measure and make a couple of marks about 1 1/4" out from the outer edges of the design. Draw lines connecting the marks and cut out the shape. I left the stabilizer on the backside of the design to give the fabric more support.
Next, to prepare the back fabric, lay the embroidered front piece on top of the fabric, right sides together, pin in place, and cut out the shape. Then, sew a 1/4" seam along the side and bottom edges only. Leave the top edge open for turning.
Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams with an iron. Cut a piece of double-sided stiff interfacing a bit smaller than the fabric and insert it inside the panel. Cut the interfacing small enough to allow about 1/4" of the fabric to extend past it at the top edge.
Turn one side of the fabric in 1/4" over the interfacing and then turn the opposite side in 1/4" and press. Top stitch a 1/8" seam along the entire outer edge of the shape. I created a total of two simple panels for my wall hanging.
Next, I will show you how to create a panel with a border. Prepare the embroidered panel as instructed earlier. Then, measure the width and height of the embroidered panel and add 2 1/2" to each dimension. Use these dimensions to cut a piece of the print cotton fabric. Next, align the embroidered panel on top of the print cotton fabric, right side facing up, with 1 1/4" of the print fabric extending out past the outer edges of the embroidered panel. Pin in place.
Next, you can add twine around the outer edge of the embroidered panel to give it a more rustic feel. Simply place the twine at one of the corners.
Then, zigzag stitch over the twine all around the shape. This attaches the twine and the embroidered panel to the print cotton fabric.
Next, finish the panel by adding the back fabric and the interfacing as instructed earlier.
I added a border to my final panel, but did not add the twine. Simply zigzag stitch the embroidered panel onto the print fabric by sewing around the entire outer edge of the embroidered fabric. I stitched around the shape two times to give it a more rustic look.
Now that all the panels are complete, it is time to assemble the wall hanging! Arrange the panels under the stick how you want them. If there are panels above and below each other, butt the panels up against one another. Then, using an air-erase pen or other marking tool, make marks in all four corners of the top panel and on the top corners of the bottom panel. Align the marks along the bottom edge of the top panel with the marks on the top edge of the bottom panel. I made my marks about 1/2" in from the outer edges of the panels.
Next, add a grommet at each mark by first cutting a small "x" using a craft knife and cutting pad. Then, add the grommet.
To add the panels to the hanger, wrap the string around the stick about three times and tie it in place along the bottom of the stick. Then, arrange the top panel under the stick and tie the other end of the string through the grommet. Repeat this for the other side of the panel. Be sure to keep the top edge of the panel straight under the stick so it will hang properly. Arrange the bottom panel under the top panel and tie it in place with the string. Once again, be sure to keep the top edge of the bottom panel aligned with the top panel so it will hang properly. Repeat this process for all of the panels.
I added bobbers and fishing lures to the bottom edges of the bottom panels, for an eye-catching three-dimensional effect. To do this, cut a small piece of string and tie a knot at one end. Then, attach the bobber to the string along the knotted end. Tie a loop at the opposite end of the string.
With needle and thread, hand-sew the bobbers in place by stitching the loop to the backside of the panel along the bottom edge. Using a wire cutter, trim off the sharp ends of the hooks on the lures. Then, hand-sew them in place along the bottom edges of the panels. Add as many bobbers and lures as you like!
