Christmas Around the World

Christmas traditions may vary from country to country around the world, but the sentiment
 of giving, joy, peace, and goodwill remain the same in any language!  Add these delightful
 Saltbox-style houses, complete with well-wishes in a variety of languages, to tote bags,
wall-hangings, sweatshirts, and framed art.
 

Celebrating the birth of Jesus, this simple stable proclaims the universal message of 'Peace on Earth'.
 		   This Hawaiian phrase for 'Merry Christmas' was made popular in a song of the same name, and sung by Bing Crosby.

In France, children put their shoes in front of the fireplace, in the hopes that Pere Noel (or Papa Noel) will fill them with gifts.

 sun to "swing" ever higher in the sky.

The Christmas tree, as we know it, originated in Germany, where it is decorated with
 apples, candy, nuts, cookies, cars, trains, angels, tinsel, family treasures, and candles
or lights. The Christmas tree in Germany is particularly magical for children as
traditionally they are not allowed to see the decorated tree until Christmas Eve.

In Germany there are two ways of saying "Merry Christmas," and both are below.

   To announce that Christmas is coming, farmers in Holland blow long horns at sunset each evening during the Christmas period. The horns are blown over water wells to make the sound extremely loud.

 England was the first country to use the custom
of kissing under the mistletoe during the
Christmas season. The phrase "Happy Christmas"
is often said in England, Australia, and New Zealand.
 		  
The phrase 'Merry Christmas' was used for the
first time in an informal letter by an English
admiral in 1699. The words 'Merry Christmas' appeared for the second time in 1843 in
Charles Dickens�, �A Christmas Carol�.

Autism Awareness Lace Ornament Cover
(A Design Request of the Week!)

Darla. T. from Michigan has already made an impact in the lives of many. With her creation and sale of the Breast Cancer Awareness lace ornament covers to local Santa shops, she has been able to donate portions of each sale to the Karmanos Cancer Institute to aid in the research of breast cancer.

Having had such success with Breast Cancer Awareness, Darla took up a cause closer to home. 
She says, "My nephew has Autism and when my brother-in-law saw the Breast Cancer ornament he said, 'What about a puzzle piece for Autism?'.  I thought it was a great idea! I plan to do the same with the Autism ornaments and donate the proceeds to our local chapter of the Autism Society of America."

With Autism affecting 1 out of every 150 births, and having no known cause or cure, it is important to help raise awareness of this disease. This delicate, lace puzzle piece ornament cover pays tribute to those battling the disease as well as those helping to fight it.  Thank you for such a wonderful and inspiring suggestion, Darla!
