The Carols of Christmas

NEW THIS WEEK - November 29th, 2006:

The Carols of Christmas

The magic of music fills the air as Christmas time approaches. Familiar songs and beloved carols have us all aglow as we bustle about our sewing rooms, creating holiday decorations and gifts to delight and surprise our friends and loved ones.

To carry the theme of that memorable Christmas music throughout your holiday sewing, the designs  this week feature five splendid songs of the season.

"Silver Bells" ring in the holidays on city sidewalks across the world, Chestnuts are roasting on an open fire in "The Christmas Song," and Santa's reindeer invite us to dance, "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" in a new old-fashioned way. The "Drummer Boy" warms our hearts with his humble gift to the Christ Child, and hearts are filled with hope in the refrain from the beloved carol, "O Holy Night."

Treat your family and friends to decorations and gifts embellished with reminders of their favorite songs and carols. The musical themes make marvelous tree skirts, linens, towels, quilted wall decor, and more.

Hum a favorite carol, whistle a happy tune, and enjoy sewing the designs this week.

Set the season for "very merry" with this delightful pinwheel tree skirt. Click here for free instructions.

Silver Bells, it's Christmas time in the city

"Silver Bells," written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, was the first Christmas song to extol the holiday season in a city setting. Up to that time, it seems, popular yuletide songs always hearkened back to images of Christmas in the countryside. Bob Hope and Marilyn Maxwell introduced the song
in the movie The Lemon Drop Kid, and Bing Crosby was first to record "Silver Bells" in 1951.

Ring the silver bells from the dining table to the front door with shapely designs that harmonize
so easily on everything from table clothes and napkins to towels, wall hangings, and door decor.

The Little Drummer Boy

This wonderful Christmas tale has been finding its way onto the Christmas recordings and choir stands for nearly half a century since it was first written and performed by the Harry Simeone choir in 1958.
The lyrics tell the story of a little boy who was so poor that he had no gift for the Infant Jesus. When he thinks to offer a song from his drum, he is rewarded with an approving smile from the Virgin Mary.

Designs feature the story of the blessed night, the little drummer boy, his drum and drumsticks, and Baby Jesus and the star of Bethlehem. Beautiful designs for tree skirts, pillows, quilts, and more.

The Christmas Song

Noted in 2005 as the Number 1 most-performed holiday song of the 21st century, this seasonal classic has always been near the top of the list since it was first recorded in 1946 by Nat King Cole. Written by Mel Torme (when he was only 19!), and Robert Wells, the song is wonderfully nostalgic. It never fails to make the season bright, even when Jack Frost is nipping at our noses.

Designs, featuring swirls of snowflakes, mistletoe, and the familiar lyrics from this Christmas standard,
will warm your home on table linens, tree skirts, pillows, quilts, fleece throws, towels, and more.

The Christmas Song - square

Traditions, such as the mistletoe, figure prominently in these timeless designs, so appropriate
for creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere in your home.

O Holy Night (from French carol: Cantique de Noel)

So musically superb, this carol was selected to be played on the first American Christmas radio broadcast in 1906. Composed in 1847 by Adolphe Adam as music for a French poem, "Minuit Chretians" by Placide Cappeau, the carol grew in popularity after John Sullivan Dwight, a Unitarian minister in Massachusetts, translated the lyrics into English for his Journal of Music in 1855.

Special Request of the Week
Embroidery Library is always inspired by your design suggestions, and we thank you for sending
us tons of terrific ideas, which we regularly incorporate into the weekly design themes. As a way to expand on designs for specific quests, this space is dedicated to the "Request of the Week."
Here is this week's request:

Unicycle
Erin requested a unicycle design for her friend's daughter, Kristen. "Kristen will be 12 in
December and is practicing quite a bit on her unicycle, which she has named Penelope,"
Erin wrote. "Penelope and Kristen have been together for about a year. Kristen likes to push
her baby brother Nicholas in his stroller while she's riding Penelope, and her goal is to be able to
ride to school."  Erin plans to embroider a T-shirt, a sweatshirt, and maybe a hat with the unicycle design as well as a towel for polishing Penelope and a pillowcase for Kristen's bed. We know a
12-year-old girl who's going to be delighted!

Available in three sizes:
5.79"X9.41" and 4.20"X6.82" and 2.40"X3.86"
