Friendship Quilts
Although Americans didn't invent patchwork and quilting, it is an art that came to be thought of as an American craft. Since the first settlers came to the Western World, women made quilts, first for their warmth, but soon for love of the art and the friendships that formed with each stitch and each quilt block. They worked together in colonial villages, on the road West in covered wagons, and in little pioneering communities out on the prairie. Perhaps no craft typifies friendship as strongly as quilting. Sharing patterns and creating new ones, quilters used geometric designs symbolic of their lives. Among the favorites are designs with colorful pieces that interlock, emphasizing the importance of relationships, tradition, and community.
