Rope 'em & Ride 'em

NEW THIS WEEK - August 16th, 2006:

Rope 'em & Ride 'em

Saddle up and hit the trails this week as we don our Western duds, tie on our paisley bandanas, and take in a rodeo or horse show with designs that will make you want to grab your guitars and sing "Home on the Range." Lasso some beautiful horses and sew up super bandana paisleys!

This week's designs feature peppy paisley shapes, just like ones that border traditional bandanas. They're a beautiful match for western wear, but they're adaptable, and the bandana patterns will look great coordinating with everything from aprons to jogging togs. With just two colors of thread, these designs make embellishing a breeze.

Versatile bandana kerchiefs also make the scene as sensational Western-style frames for the best icons of the West -- boots, hat, saddle, horseshoes. So great on totes, jackets, and more.

Wild about horses? Catch a high-stepping Show Horse in action as the crowd roars its approval or frame the portrait of America's Quarter Horse. Capture the flying heels of some of the most popular breeds for your thread art this week -- the Thoroughbred, Appaloosa, Tennessee Walking Horse, Quarter Horse, Paint, and Arabian -- pick your favorite or get all six as a value pack.

Happy trails, and happy sewing with the designs this week!

Free project instructions! A soft, stadium seat carryall with pockets to hold snacks and refreshments.

Herds of Horses
Horses, domesticated for thousands of years, serve mostly at the pleasure of humans. It is thrilling to see how they work in concert with a rider -- cutting cattle, policing a crowd, racing for the finish line, jumping a barrier -- but perhaps they are never so beautiful as when they are running free. The following six designs are artful examples of some of the most popular breeds. Sew your favorites on totes, shirts, blankets, quilts, and all the projects of your heart's desire.

Thoroughbred
A graceful horse of almost perfect proportions, the thoroughbred has an elegant, long neck and powerful hindquarters. All Thoroughbreds can be traced to the 18th century when three great Arabian stallions were brought to England to be crossed with that country's best native mares. One of the fastest in the world, this horse is the one we most often see on the race tracks of the world.
Available in two sizes:
7.79"X5.86" and 6.46"X4.86"

Appaloosa
This strong, fast and sure-footed horse was first bred by the Nez Perce, the only American Indians known to selectively breed their horses. The Nez Perce, from the inland Northwest, didn't name their spotted mounts "Appaloosa." White settlers called the colorful animal "a Palouse horse," for the river that flows through areas of Idaho and Washington, and the term slurred to "Appalousey." The name "Appaloosa" was officially adopted in 1938.
Available in two sizes:
8.17"X5.84" and 6.75"X4.82"

Tennessee Walking Horse
One of the greatest pleasure, show, and trail riding horses, the Tennessee was bred in bluegrass country from the bloodlines of many American horses. Largely used for utility and transportation in the early years of American history, it owes its name to its natural ease of gait and ability to stride faultlessly over the hills and valleys of rocky terrain. Its gentle disposition together with its smooth,
easy gate, has made it one of the most popular of all the riding horses.
Available in two sizes:
7.54"X5.85" and 6.23"X4.82"

Quarter Horse
The first breed of horse native to America, the Quarter Horse is a breed that evolved from the many horses brought to the New World colonies from the Middle East, England, and Ireland. It has a short head, muscular neck, and powerful hindquarters for bursts of speed and agile maneuverability. A natural for ranch work, the Quarter Horse is popular for rodeo competitions, racing, and riding.
Available in two sizes:
6.79"X5.85" and 5.59"X4.85"

Paint Horse
A popular western stock horse and cow pony, the Paint was probably brought to the American continent by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. This versatile and intelligent horse is defined by his coat pattern -- white with darker patches. In the late 1950s, a group was organized to preserve the breed.
Available in two sizes:
8.44"X5.85" and 6.86"X4.76"

Arabian Horse
A horse of the desert, the Arabian was bred for 4,500 years by the Bedouin, nomadic peoples of the Middle East. Its unique characteristics were those prized by the Bedouin's religious beliefs: its bulging forehead, blessings of Allah; arching neck and high crest, a sign of courage; high-carried tail, pride. Primarily used for war and racing competitions, the Arabian was bred in isolation for many years. The mysterious Eastern horse made a very special gift indeed when it was finally shared by heads of state with Europe. And, it was to have an enormous influence on horse breeding throughout the world.
Available in two sizes:
5.85"X6.89" and 4.85"X5.68"

Show Horse
Under the scrutiny of the judges' eyes, a show horse goes through its required gaits with vigor and precision. Among the factors the judges look for are rhythm, length of stride, and smooth transitions, as well as a horse's overall appearance, especially its neck set. Watching a horse and rider perform in graceful harmony is a sight that an appreciative audience will long remember.
Available in two sizes:
7.34"X5.85" and 6.02"X4.82"

Quarter Horse - Portrait
A most intelligent animal, the quarter horse is a favorite for riding now, but indispensable on the ranches of the Old West. The first truly American horse, he has a muscular neck and powerful hindquarters that are built for bursts of speed. This design that will be truly handsome framed or on a jacket back or bag.
Available in three sizes:
7.02"X9.94" and 5.87"X8.30" and 4.83"X6.81"

Bucking Bronco with U.S. Flag
As American as apple pie, the "true grit" a cowboy demonstrates on a bucking bronco couples
well with the symbol of the United States flag. Rodeo performances now play all over the world, but the competitions hearken back to the mystique of the Old West and the skills needed for cattle raising.

Available in three sizes:
7.22"X5.85" and 5.92"X4.80" and 3.85"X3.12"

Green Wing Macaw
Barbara loves making shirts and quilts for her friends using the tropical bird designs. She wrote, "I am a tropical bird owner, and I have enjoyed stitching all of your beautiful designs. The Green Wing Macaw is so beautiful, but you have yet to do a design of it. I would love to see a design like in this picture."
Barbara cares for 17 tropical birds, including her green wing, Ali-macaw, and she has been involved in the aviculture community for more than 40 years. "We belong to many rescue groups," she says. "The picture I sent you shows the Green Wing, the way that he should be, flying free."

Available in two sizes:
7.12"X5.85" and 5.83"X4.81"
