When the summer sun is hot, we are ready to dream of those crisp, snowy days of Christmas. And, summer days are a wonderful time to dream of ideas and sew some projects for holiday gifts and decorating. So, put on a Bing Crosby version of America's all-time favorite holiday tune, and let this week's designs be an inspiration for some summer sewing.

Lace bookmarks in holiday themes will be wonderful to have on hand for stocking stuffers and for adding a special touch among the ribbons on gift packages.

Vintage poinsettias and heirloom wreaths are delightfully delicate and hearken of thread art that's just like grandma used to sew. You'll adore the Old World art of St. Nicholas-like Santas and the panel designs of a Victorian village at holiday time. For sheer elegance and ease, sew graceful vintage angels in toile for linens, quilts, and table decorations. They're welcome additions to the toile holiday design selection.

Old World Santas
The legend of St. Nicholas came to the Americas from Europe, where every country seemed to have its own version of this stately and kindly saint who did good deeds, gave aid to poor children, and left gifts in the night. Long before American illustrator Thomas Nast and Coca Cola made St. Nick into the famous roly-poly Santa of "Christmas Night," the saintly gentleman was pictured as a slender, grandfatherly chap who was cloaked -- but not always in red.

St. Nick in an embroidered cloak, smiles up at the chickadee offering to help decorate his little tree.		The legendary St. Nicholas visited the poor in the night, bringing gifts and good fortune.

Christmas Angels (Toile)
In the Old World elegance of toile, graceful angels tell of God's grace and the Christmas story.
Toile designs are modeled after the centuries-old French Toile du Jouy. This classic design style is executed in just one color. But that is where simplicity ends, because this thread art is like the fine, graceful lines of engraving: the variety of stitches and the use of negative space gives the effect of extraordinary depth and dimension.
