Antique Bitters Bottles
In the past, bitters were marketed as patent medicines for digestive and circulatory disorders. Because bitters live up to their name, and are indeed bitter, they were mixed with other spirits to make them taste better, and the cocktail was born! These days bitters are used primarily for drinks, and not for medicinal purposes. In 19th century United States, bitters were commonly expensive, and came in fancy, colorful bottles shaped like log cabins or fish, which were often kept as decorative objects. The fish-shaped bottle design was patented in 1806, and held "Doctor Fisch's Bitters."
