Start with a 12" x 16" piece of fabric -- something sturdy, like linen, Kona cotton, or twill.

Templates are printouts of embroidery designs, and they are excellent tools for planning where to stitch.

Open the embroidery designs in embroidery software and print them to make templates. If you don't have software, try Wilcom's TrueSizer, a free program.

Center the template inside the shape, and 3" up from the bottom. Mark the center point and the horizontal and vertical axis lines.

Hoop the fabric with a piece of cutaway stabilizer, lining up those marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point, and embroider the design.

After the design is finished, trim the excess stabilizer away from the back.
