Freestanding lace designs have been specially digitized for water-soluble stabilizer. After the stabilizer is removed, beautiful lace remains behind.

There are a couple of different kinds of water-soluble stabilizer. One is clear and plastic, and that brand is Sulky Ultra Solvy. The other is soft and fibrous, called Vilene. Both will work very well. Vilene is used in this demonstration.

Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharp sewing needle. A sharp sewing needle has a smaller, finer point than an embroidery needle. That means it will make smaller holes in the stabilizer.

Freestanding lace is seen from both sides, so wind a bobbin with the same thread that you're using in the needle.

Hoop the stabilizer firmly. Make sure it is nice and tight with no wrinkles.

Use 40 weight rayon or polyester thread. You can also use 30 weight cotton or metallic thread for most freestanding lace designs.

Embroider the lace.

After embroidering, cut the excess stabilizer away.

The stabilizer's packaging should give instructions for removing the excess. For Vilene, soak the lace pieces for a few moments.

Decide how long your necklace will be.

Use jewelry pliers to separate the lengths of chain.

The chains for this necklace are 10" long on one side and 12" long on the other side so the lace charm will hang at an angle. Choosing the same measurements for both sides will keep the lace hanging straight.

Add jump rings to the bottom ends of the chains. Add the jump rings to the outer borders of the lace.

Add the clasp pieces to the top ends of the chains to complete the necklace.

Heat-set crystals or glue-on crystals can be added for extra sparkle.

Fabric glue was used to add crystals to this lace charm. You can also use bead or gem glue to add the crystals.

Beads were also added along each end of the lace to add even more sparkle! To do this, add beads to eye pins. Then add the eye pin to the bottom end of the chain and the outer borders of the lace with jump rings.
