Keep warm in style this winter season with a delightful tie scarf! Beautiful embroidery adorns the end of this winter necessity, while creative tied edges offer a fun alternative to fringe.

Project Needs & Notes:

- 2 yards solid-colored fleece
- 2 yards print fleece
- Medium weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer
- Light-weight water-soluble stabilizer
(for topping -- I prefer Sulky Solvy)
- Air-erase pen for marking

The design used in this tutorial is L8023, Falling Snowflakes.

Finished Size: 10" wide x 72" long

The video tutorial demonstrates how to embroider
on fleece. Specific instructions for the
fleece scarf are below.

To get started, decide how long and how wide you would like your scarf.

When determining the width of your scarf, allow 2 1/2" along each side edge of your chosen design and 6" under the design (to allow for the fringe later on). For instance, this design is about 6" wide, so I cut my fabric to 11" by 72".

Print a template of your design from embroidery software.

A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool for planning where to stitch.

If you do not have embroidery software to print templates, try  Wilcom's TrueSizer, a free program.

Lay the fabric flat with the right side facing up. Place the template onto the fabric and mark the center point and the horizontal and vertical axis lines.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks.

For this project, you will hoop the fabric with one piece of cutaway stabilizer, along with a topping of light-weight water-soluble stabilizer.

This topping will help prevent the stitches from falling too far into the fabric.

Hoop all the layers together, aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so that the needle is directly aligned with the center point on the fabric.

Embroider the design.

When the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery.

Also, tear away the water-soluble stabilizer on the front.

You can remove any small bits by dabbing the fabric with a damp sponge.

Repeat the template marking and embroidering process for the opposite end of the fabric.

Lay the embroidered front piece on top of the print fleece, right sides together.

Pin in place and cut out the shape around the edges of the front piece.

Sew a 1/2" seam along the long side edges only starting and stopping 5" from the corners of the fabric.

Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams with a pressing cloth and an iron set on low (the pressing cloth will prevent the fabric from scorching or melting).

Measure and mark 5" up along the long side edges starting at each corner. Then, draw a line between the marks. Sew a seam along the lines.

Lay the scarf flat with the raw ends aligned. Measure and mark 1" increments along the bottom edge of the fabric.

Draw vertical lines from the marks up to the seam.

Cut the fabric along the lines cutting through both layers -- be careful to not cut the seam.

To create the fringed edge, tie the front and back strips of fabric together with a knot.
