Transform a warm and cozy winter sweater into a sweet and thoughtful gift in no time! Bright embroidery adds Christmas flair to the homemade bag; a brightly hued ribbon ties the treats and goodies inside.

Special Notes:
You can create four gift bags from one sweater! Two from the bottom corners and two from the sleeves.

Lay the sweater flat and using an air-erase pen, draw a 8" x 9" rectangle on one of the bottom corners.

Cut out the shape, cutting through both layers of the sweater (the bottom cuff of the sweater will become the top edge of the bag).

A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool for planning where to stitch.

Print a template of the design from your embroidery software.

If you do not have embroidery software to print templates, try  Wilcom's TrueSizer, a free program.

Lay the fabric flat with the right side facing up. Center the template on the left side of the fabric as shown.

Mark the center point and the horizontal and vertical axis points.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks.

Spray a piece of medium-weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top.

Lay one piece of light-weight water-soluble stabilizer on top of the fabric -- this topping will help prevent the stitches from falling too far into the fabric.

Hoop all the layers together, aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so that the needle is directly aligned with the center point on the fabric.

Embroider the design.

When the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery.

Also, tear-away the water-soluble stabilizer on the front.

You can remove any small bits by dabbing the fabric with a damp sponge.

Fold the fabric along the seam and align the two sides together, right sides together.

Pin in place. Sew a 1/2" seam along the side and bottom raw edges.

Turn the bag right side out, fill with goodies, and tie the bag closed with ribbon tied into a bow.

Another option is to use the sleeves for your gift bag.

Measure 9" down the sleeve starting at the outer edge of the cuff. Draw a line across the sleeve and cut along the line through both layers.

Open the sleeve by opening the seam.

Lay the fabric flat and mark the design, embroider the design, and assemble the bag as instructed above.

This warm and cozy gift bag is a beautiful way to give sweet treats and small gifts to your friends and loved ones.

Hang on your tree as a surprise on Christmas morning, or you can use as a goodie bag at holiday parties, too.
