Free project instructions to make a Nine Patch Pillow.

This pillow is composed of nine blocks or patches, and it's an excellent way to feature your favorite designs and fabric prints. The example uses a cool color palette and damask designs for a contemporary look, but change the fabric colors and designs to suit your decor preference!

Project Needs & Notes

-
18" x 18" high pillow form
-
5/8 yard linen for front embroidered blocks, inner lining, and back pieces, I used linen
-
1/4 yard print quilter's cotton for front blocks
-
1/4 yard polyester shantung for outer borders
- Medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer
- Air-erase pen for marking

For this tutorial, I used the
smallest size of the Dainty Floral Damask 1, Dainty Floral Damask 2, Damask Butterfly, and Flutterby Fashion 6, and the medium size of the Damask Branch and Bird. Browse through the many Embroidery Library designs to find something that matches your preference and decor. For the best fit, choose designs that fit in a 4" x 4" hoop for this pillow project.

Finished Size: 18" x 18"

Begin by preparing the fabric for the embroidered blocks.

Using an air-erase pen, mark a
5 1/2" x  5 1/2" square on the linen.

Measure and mark the center of each side and draw lines connecting the marks.

A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool for planning where to stitch.

Print a template of the design from your embroidery software. If you do not have embroidery software to print templates, try  Wilcom's TrueSizer, a free program.

Place the template within the square. There should be at least 1/2" in between the outer edges of the design and the side and bottom edges of the square.

Hoop the fabric and cutaway stabilizer together. Align the marks that you made on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so that the needle is directly aligned with the center point on the fabric.

Embroider the design.

When the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery.

Then, using a rotary cutter and cutting mat, cut out the shape.

Repeat this process so that you have a total of 5 embroidered blocks.

To prepare the remaining front blocks, cut four 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" wide blocks from quilter's cotton.

Lay an embroidered block flat with the right side facing up.

Align one of the print blocks on top of the embroidered block, right sides together, with the left sides of the blocks aligned. Pin in place.

Repeat with a second print block, only doing so on the right side.

Sew a 1/4" seam along each pinned edge only.

Press the back seams open with an iron.

Assemble the top and bottom rows just as you did for the middle row, but this time align two embroidered blocks on top of one print block.

Sew a 1/4" seam along each pinned edge and press the seams.

Now that the three rows are ready, lay them out.

Align the top row with the middle row, right sides together, with the bottom edge of the top row aligned with the top edge of the middle row. Be sure to also align the block seams together.

Pin in place, and sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge only.

Next, align the bottom row with the middle row, right sides together, with the top of the bottom row aligned with the bottom of the middle row.

Pin in place, sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edge only, and press.

To prepare the top and bottom outer borders, cut two pieces of polyester shantung to 15 1/4" x 2 1/4".

Align the border fabric, right sides together, along the top and bottom edges of the assembled front piece.

Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edges.

Press the seams with a pressing cloth on top to prevent melting or scorching.

Prepare the side outer borders by cutting two pieces of polyester shantung to 2 1/4" x 18 1/2".

Align the border pieces, right sides together, with the right and left sides of the front piece.

Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edges.

Press with a pressing cloth.

Prepare the inner lining by laying the front piece on top of the fabric (I used linen) wrong sides together, pin in place, and cut around the shape of the front piece.

Cut two pieces of linen to 13" x 18 1/2" high.

On each piece, fold one of the side edges in 1/2" to the wrong side and press. Fold that side in again 1/2" and press.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the folded edges.

Lay the front piece flat with the embroidered side facing up. Align the back pieces on top, right sides together, with folded edges facing inwards and the back pieces overlapping.

Align the outer edges of the back and front pieces.

Sew a 1/4" seam along the entire outer edge of the shape.

Change the entire look of this patchwork pillow by using different fabrics, patterns, and designs.

Here heirloom applique designs give a cozy, country blanket-stitch border. Use snowflake designs and frosty prints for wintery, or bright colors with monsters for little ones.

The designs used in this pillow are from the Country Heirloom Applique Design Pack.
