Begin by cutting a piece of linen to 48" x 48" high, then fold the fabric in half.

Fold the fabric in half again and pin the layers in place.

Using yarn or string, tie a loop on one end and place it at the folded corner of the fabric. Extend the string out 24" onto the fabric and tie it around an air-erase pen or other marking tool.

Hold the loop end in place at the folded point of the fabric and with your other hand use the pen to draw an arc across the fabric from corner to corner.

Also, hold the string at the folded corner extending 2 1/2" onto the fabric and draw another arc from one side of the fabric to the other.

Cut along each line, cutting through all the layers of the fabric.

Lay the fabric flat and make a straight cut from the outer edge of the fabric to the inner circle.

Create paper templates of the designs by printing them with embroidery software. If you don't have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program that can print templates.

Place the templates on the fabric where you want them. I positioned 8 designs around the fabric leaving about 9" in between each design (from outer edge to outer edge) and 3 1/2" from the bottom edge of the design and the bottom edge of the fabric.

Mark the center point and horizontal and vertical axis lines for each template.

Spray a piece of medium-weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together. Move the hoop so that the needle is right over the center point; embroider the design.

When the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer. Repeat the hooping and embroidering process for each design.

To prepare the back of the skirt, lay the embroidered front piece on top of the fabric, right sides together. Pin in place and cut around the shape of the front piece. Cut a slit in the fabric just as you did for the front piece.

To prepare the fabric for the ruffle trim, cut two pieces of the linen fabric to 104" x 10". Align the two pieces, right sides together, and pin in place at one of the short ends. Sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edge only. Press the back seam open with an iron.

Fold the short ends in 1/2" to the wrong side and press. Also, fold the fabric together lengthwise (long edges aligned) with the wrong sides together. Press the fold, pin in place, and top stitch a 1/8" seam along the short ends and folded edge.

Insert the trim in-between the front and back fabric layers with the raw edge of the trim aligned with the outer edges of the fabric. Pin in place one inch from the edges of the slit in the back fabric.

To create the ruffle, every 3" pinch and fold the trim 1/2" all the way around the outer edge of the shape; pin in place. Align the front fabric on top of the trim/back piece, pin in place, and sew a 1/2" seam along the entire outer edge of the fabric, up one side of the slit, and around the inner circle. Leave one side of the slit open for turning.

Fold the fabric of the opening in 1/2" to the wrong side and press.

To create the button loops, cut three 6" lengths of 3/8" ribbon, form them into loops and insert them in between the layers in the opening. Place two of the loops about one inch from each of the ends of the opening and one in the center of the opening. Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the edge of the opening.

Align the edges of the slit together (with the ribbon loops laying across the opposite side of the fabric) and mark the fabric inside each ribbon loop. Add a large button at each mark and your tree skirt is ready to go!
