To get started, prepare the fabric for the front applique piece. Using a marking tool, draw a 6 1/2" wide by 3" high rectangle on the fabric. Leave a couple of inches of excess fabric around the shape.

Create a paper template of the design by printing it at full size using embroidery software. If you haven't used software to make templates before, these handy instructions will show you how.

Position the template inside the shape and center it side-to-side and top-to-bottom by measuring equal distances in between the outer edges of the design and the edges of the shape. Also make sure the design fits well within the shape -- there should be at least 1/4" of space in between the outer edges of the design and the edges of the shape. Poke a hole in the center of the template and mark the fabric; mark the horizontal and vertical axis points.

To round off the top point of the fabric, place a thread spool at the point and trace the shape and cut along the traced line.

To add the embroidered applique piece, lay the outer shell fabric flat, right side facing up, with the point facing down. Spray the backside of the embroidered piece with temporary adhesive and place along the right side of the top portion of the fabric with the top edge of the applique piece about one inch from the top edge of the outer shell fabric (see image).

Smooth it in place and zigzag stitch around the entire outer edges of the applique fabric piece.

Add the bottom portion of the snap onto the outer shell (on the right side) 3" down and 3/4" in starting from the top left corner.

To prepare the inner lining fabric (we used quilter's cotton), place the outer shell over the fabric, wrong sides together, trace and cut out the shape.

Now prepare the fabric for the cell phone pocket. Draw a 7 1/2" wide by 4 1/2" high rectangle on the fabric. Create a paper template and position the design within the shape where you want it (we placed the design in the lower left corner about one inch from the outer edges of the shape). Mark the fabric, hoop the fabric, and embroider the design just as you did earlier. Trim away the excess stabilizer and cut out the shape.

Measure and mark 3 1/4" in along the top edge of the fabric starting at the top left corner. Draw a line from this mark down to the lower right corner.

Fold the fabric along the line, wrong sides together, pin in place, and sew a 1/8" seam along the folded edge. Trim away the excess fabric at the backside of the pocket leaving about 1/4" behind.

Align the left edge of the pocket with the left edge of the inner lining with the top edge of the pocket 3 1/2" down from the top edge of the inner lining. Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the top and bottom edges of the pocket only.

To create the card/cash pocket, first cut a piece of the fabric to 9 1/2" wide by 4" high (for the back). Cut another piece to 9 1/2" wide by 3" high (for the front). Fold the top edge of each piece over 1/2" to the wrong side, finger press, and sew a 1/4" seam along the folded edges only. Lay the back piece flat, right side facing up. Place the front piece on top of the back piece, right side facing up, with the bottom edges aligned. Pin in place and zigzag stitch along the side edges only.

Mark one inch in along the bottom edge of the pocket starting at each bottom corner. Also, mark the center of the bottom edge by measuring and dividing by two. Draw vertical lines from these marks up to the top edge of the front of the pocket. Sew a seam at along each line - this creates the separate sections in the pocket.

Align the bottom edge of the pocket along the bottom edge of the inner lining, pin in place and zigzag stitch along the side edges of the pocket to tack it in place.

Spray the backside of the outer shell with all-purpose permanent adhesive. Align the inner lining/pocket section on top, wrong sides together, and smooth in place.
