Applique designs have never been cuter than these peek-a-boo pals sticking their heads and tails out of your kiddo's favorite hoodie. Give the hooded sweatshirt as a gift, or make it for your own little one.

These instructions demonstrate how to position the applique designs so they peek from pockets. If you're working with the stitch-filled designs (not applique), please reference those instructions here.

Project Needs & Notes

-
Sweatshirt with front pockets
- Small pieces of cotton fabric (flannel) for applique pieces
- Medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer
- Air-erase pen for marking

The design in this tutorial is
X11574, Spunky Unicorn (Split, Applique).

This project uses an applique technique. If you're new to applique, and using dielines to cut the fabric to the proper shape and size, this free video is an excellent guide.

Sizing Notes:
Before stitching, take a look at the area around the pockets of the shirt. Measure the area around one of the pockets (just to the outside of the pocket and up to the side seam) to see how much room you have to work with. Then, choose a design that will fit in that area.

A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool to plan where to stitch. To place these designs precisely so that they peek out of the pockets, templates are essential.

Print templates of the designs from your embroidery software. If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program to use.

Trim around the templates to make them easier to place on the shirt.

If the sweatshirt has a zipper, unzip it.

Place the shirt flat with its right side pocket facing up.

Place the template for the front of the dinosaur to the left of the pocket, with the template inserted slightly inside (1/8" - 1/4") inside the pocket.

Use an air-erase pen to mark the center point of the design on the fabric, as well as the vertical and horizontal axis lines.

Applique designs have dieline files; they're marked with the letters DL. Dielines are used to cut the fabric to the right shape and size before embroidering.

Open the dieline files with embroidery software and print them.

Spray a piece of cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the flannel on top.

Place the dieline for the front of the unicorn on top of the flannel.

Cut out the shape for the unicorn.

Repeat this step for the back of the unicorn too.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the full embroidery design for the front of the unicorn (not a dieline).

Move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point.

Embroider the design, and follow the color change sheet as you stitch.

The first thing to embroider is an outline or dieline, and that traces the shape of the unicorn.

After that has stitched, spray the stabilizer side of the flannel piece with a small amount of spray adhesive.

Place that right inside the stitched outline on the fabric.

Attach the hoop back onto the machine and continue embroidering the design.

A zigzag or tack down stitch will sew next, and that binds the applique fabric to the sweatshirt.

Other elements will sew, including a satin stitch border.

When the design has finished, remove the pins, unhoop the shirt, and trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the fabric.
