Supplies Needed:

**2 yards fleece

**Water soluble stabilizer
  - for topping (we prefer
  Sulky Solvy or Sulky
  Super Solvy)

**Medium weight cutaway
  stabilizer

**Temporary spray adhesive

**Air-erase pen or dressmaker's pencil (for marking and placement)

Designs Used:

I used the large size of the Fluttering Filigree Border and the large size of the Fluttering Filigree Corner. Choose designs from the Borders and Corners category to create a fashionable fleece poncho as unique as you!

Finished Size:  35" wide by 35" high

I will begin by cutting a piece of fleece to 36 wide by 36 high. Lay the fleece flat with the right side facing up.

Create paper templates of the designs by printing them at full size using embroidery software. If you havent worked with templates to position designs before, see these step-by-step instructions for more information about making and using templates.

Cut around the templates to make them easy to place. Arrange them on the fabric how you want them. I placed a corner design on each side and bottom corners of the fabric with the outer edges of the designs about 2" from the outer edges of the fabric. I also placed border designs along the edges of the fabric (in between the corner designs) with the outer edges of the designs about 2" from the outer edges of the fabric. I then measured equal distances in between the side edges of each of the designs.

Using an air-erase pen or other marking tool (I used a water soluble pencil since I am marking on a dark fabric) poke holes in the center of the templates and mark the fabric. Also, mark the horizontal and vertical axis points.

Have fun planning your placement of the designs - you can place them anywhere you like. Here is an example of some border designs running up just one side of the poncho.

And here is an example of two corner designs placed near the bottom corner and a border along each side edge.

Remove the templates and draw lines connecting the marks. Spray a piece of medium weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric.

If you are embroidering on a textured or high pile fleece, add one piece of water soluble stabilizer on top of the fleece and hoop all three layers together. This topping prevents the stitches from sinking too far into the fabric. I am embroidering on smooth fleece, so no topping was needed. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the first design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design.

When the design has finished, unhoop the fabric and rehoop the fabric for the next design. The first design might be hooped - this is ok, the design will not be harmed. Attach the hoop to the machine, load the second design, align the needle with the center point on the fabric and embroider the design.

Repeat the hooping and embroidering process for all of the remaining designs.

When all the designs have finished carefully trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery and if you used a topping, tear it away as well. If any small bits of the topping remain, you can use a tweezers to remove them. Or, wet your fingertips with water and gently brush the bits away.

Now it is time to assemble the poncho. To prepare the back fabric cut another piece of fabric to 36 wide by 36 high. Lay the embroidered piece flat with the right side facing up. Align the back fabric piece on top, right sides together, and pin in place. Sew a 1/2" seam along the outer edges of the shape leaving about 4" open along one of the sides for turning. Turn the fabric right side out and push out the corners. Also, turn the fabric of the opening in 1/2", pin in place, and top stitch a 1/4" seam along the entire outer edge of the poncho.

I will create the opening in the center of the poncho by laying it flat with the embroidered side facing up and with the bottom corner facing towards me. Measure and mark the center of the width of the poncho by measuring in between the two side corners and dividing by two. Measure and mark 6" out from the mark along each side and draw a line connecting the marks (the line will be 12" long).

Cut through both layers of the fabric along this line. Also, make 1/2" cuts out from the ends of the cut you just made (cut along each side) perpendicular to the first cut.

Fold both layers of fabric in towards the wrong side 1/2" and pin in place. Sew a 1/4" seam along the folds. Zigzag stitch along each end of the opening.
