Velvet should not be hooped, as the hoop leaves a permanent ring. Instead, hoop the stabilizer, and affix the velvet on top.

To do that, follow these steps:

Cut a piece of cutaway stabilizer a little larger than your hoop.

Spray the stabilizer with a small amount of temporary adhesive (Gunold KK100), then hoop the stabilizer firmly.

Smooth the velvet on top.

Velvet has a nap, so a topping of water-soluble stabilizer helps to keep the stitches from sinking into the fabric.

Add a piece of lightweight water-soluble stabilizer on top of the velvet.

Attach the hoop to the machine and embroider the design.

When the design has finished, tear away the water-soluble topping.

If any small bits remain, use tweezers to remove them, or simply wet your fingertips and gently brush the stabilizer away.

Draw a 5" x 5" square on a piece of paper. Draw lines from corner to corner and cut out the shape.

Lay the embroidered piece flat with the right side facing up and with the design upright.

Poke a hole in the center of the paper shape and align it with the center of the design.

Pin in place.

Using an air-erase marker, trace the paper shape onto the fabric and then cut out the shape.

For the opposite side of the ornament, repeat the above steps: embroider a design, trace the ornament shape, and cut out.

To add the decorative trim, lay one of the embroidered pieces flat with the right side facing up.

Align the outer edge of the trim with the seam allowance of the embroidered piece and pin in place. Cut slits in the seam allowance of your fabric at every corner.

Overlap the ends of the trim about 1/4" and cut it. If the trim starts to unravel, add a couple of drops of fabric glue to the ends.

Using a zipper foot on your machine, sew around the shape as close to the trim as possible (just to the outside -- 1/2"
seam).

To add the opposite side, align it on top of the assembled trim piece, right sides together. Pin in place, and sew a seam as close to the trim as possible (just to the outside -- 1/2" seam). Leave about 2" open along one side for turning.

Turn the fabric right side out and stuff the ornament with polyester fiberfill until firm.

Turn the fabric of the opening in to the wrong side. Use a needle and thread to hand-sew the opening shut.

To add the hanger, cut a piece of decorative cord to about 12" long. Tie the ends together into a knot and fray the ends.

Using needle and thread, sew the loop end of the cord to the top corner of the ornament.

To add the tassel, thread beads through the tassel's cord and either hand sew or glue the end of the tassel to the bottom corner of the ornament.

In this example, the end of the tassel was glued in place and tucked between the trim and the fabric.

Another option is to add the trim after the fabric layers are sewn together.

Follow the instructions above, but instead of adding trim between the layers, use fabric glue to glue rope trim around the shape.

Decorative trim, tassels, and faceted beads will add elegant shimmer and sparkle to the ornaments.

The dark blue color and sophisticated velvet contrast beautifully with the white embellishments.
