Pockets o' Plenty Wall Hanging

Free project instructions to make a Season's Greetings Wall Hanging

This wall hanging features a trio of pockets, perfect for tucking cards and seasonal elements.

It hangs from a curtain rod, which we decorated with faux greenery. It's a beautiful way to dress up a wall with bright and colorful embroidery designs!

We used Christmas designs, poinsettias, and sprigs of faux evergreen for a festive touch for the holidays. Choose other themes and subjects to make this wall hanging for special events and occasions.

Read on for step-by-step instructions!

   to 48" inches)

**Ring clips (hangers for the
  curtain rod)

**1 1/4 yard print sturdy
   cotton fabric (for front and
   back panel - I used
   lightweight canvas)

**1/4 yard print cotton fabric

(for top and bottom accents
   - I used quilter's cotton)

Supplies Continued:

**1/3 yard solid colored sturdy cotton fabric
(for front of pockets - I used lightweight canvas)

**1/3 yard fabric (for inner pocket borders - I used textured canvas)

**1/4 yard fabric (for outer pocket borders - I used lightweight canvas)

**Medium weight cutaway stabilizer

**Temporary spray adhesive

**Air-erase pen or dressmaker's pencil (for marking)

**Needle and thread for some hand sewing

Designs Used:

I used the large sizes of the Merry and Bright Christmas Square, Peace Love Joy Christmas Square, and Merry Christmas Tree Square designs for this project. If you're adjusting the wall hanging to make a smaller piece, choose smaller designs for the pockets.

Finished Size:
15 3/4" wide by 45" long

To get started, I will prepare the fabric for the embroidered front pocket pieces. Cut a piece of fabric (I used lightweight canvas) a bit larger than your hoop. Spray a piece of medium weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together, attach the hoop to the machine, then load and embroider the first design.

When the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery.

Using an air-erase pen or other marking tool, measure and make marks 1" out from the outer edges of the design. Using a straight edge, draw lines connecting the marks. Cut out the shape. Repeat this process for each pocket for a total of three embroidered front pocket pieces.

To prepare the fabric for the inner side borders of the pockets, measure the side edges of the shape and cut two pieces of fabric to 2" wide by the measurement you just took - (mine is 8" so I cut my fabric pieces to 2" wide by 8" high). Align the fabric pieces along the side edges of the embroidered front pocket piece, right sides together, pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edges only. Press the seams with an iron.

We will create the inner top and bottom borders of the pockets by measuring the top and bottom edges of the assembled front pocket, (including the side border pieces). Cut two pieces of fabric to the measurement you just took by 2" high (mine is 10" so I cut my fabric pieces to 10" wide by 2" high). Align the fabric pieces along the top and bottom edges of the assembled front pocket piece, right sides together, pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edges only. Press the seams.

Now we will add the outer side borders of the pockets. Measure the side edges of the front pocket, (including the inner border pieces) and cut two pieces of fabric to 1 1/4" wide by the measurement you just took (mine is 10" so I cut my fabric pieces to 1 1/4" wide by 10" high). Align the fabric pieces along the side edges of the assembled front pocket piece, right sides together, pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edges only. Press the seams.

To create the outer top and bottom borders of the pockets, measure the top and bottom edges of the assembled front piece and cut two pieces of fabric to the measurement you just took by 1 1/4" high (mine is 11" so I cut my fabric pieces to 11" wide by 1 1/4" high). Align the fabric pieces along the top and bottom edges of the assembled front pocket piece, right sides together, pin in place and sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edges only. Press the seams.

To add the back of the pockets, lay the front panel on top of the fabric you'd like to use for the back with right sides together. Pin in place, and cut around the shape of the front pocket panel.

Sew a 1/2" seam along the outer edges of the shape leaving about 2" to 3" open along the bottom edge for turning. Turn the fabric right side out, push out the corners, and press the seams.

Turn the fabric of the opening in 1/2" and press. With needle and thread, stitch the opening closed.

Then sew a seam along the top edge (only) of the pocket following along the existing seam of the outer border.

To prepare the fabric for the front side of the wall hanging panel, (I used print lightweight canvas) cut it to 17" wide by 41" high.

Add the accent fabric to the top and bottom edges of the panel piece by first cutting two pieces of fabric (I used print quilter's cotton) to 17" wide by 4" high. Align the fabric pieces with the top and bottom edges of the front panel
piece, right sides together, pin in place, and sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edges only. Press the seams and top stitch a 1/8" seam along the folded edge of the accent fabric.

Lay the assembled front panel piece flat with the right side facing up. Place the pockets on top, right sides facing up, with about 2" in between the top edge of the top pocket and the bottom edge of the top accent fabric. Leave about 2" in between the bottom edge of the bottom pocket and the top edge of the bottom accent fabric.
Measure equal distances in between each pocket (about 3") and also in between the side edges of each pocket and the side edges of the front panel fabric. Pin the pockets in place and sew a seam along the side and bottom edges (only) of each pocket following along the existing seams of the outer borders.

To add the back panel fabric, lay the front panel on top of your fabric, right sides together, pin in place, and cut around the shape of the front panel. Sew a 1/2" seam along the edges of the shape leaving about 5" open along the bottom edge for turning. Turn the fabric right side out and press the seams. Turn the fabric of the opening in 1/2" and press. Top stitch a 1/4" seam along the entire outer edge of the shape.
