You'll hear sleigh bells ringing with this festive skirt. Not only does it use a mix of twill, print cotton, and polyester shantung fabrics for added interest and texture, but ribbon adorned with jingle bells holds each of the embroidered panels together.

Project Needs & Notes

-
2 yards twill for back of panels
- 1/2 yard print cotton fabric for bottom trim and top pieces
-
1/2 yard polyester shantung for middle embroidered pieces and top pieces
- 1/2 yard suede cloth for middle embroidered pieces and top pieces
- 1/2 yard linen for middle embroidered pieces
- 1/4 yard polyester shantung for top pieces

For this tutorial, three different fabrics and colors are used for the middle and bottom panels of the tree skirts. Four different fabrics are used for the top pieces of the panels. You can choose to make your panels all one color with one fabric, or mix and match the fabrics as demonstrated here.

Designs used in this tutorial include the Trimming the Tree with Santa and Pals - Large design pack. Browse through the Christmas department to find something that matches your preference and decor. Designs that are sized at 6" by 10" or smaller are good choices for this project.

Cut out the pattern pieces and tape them together.

Prepare the fabric for the middle embroidered piece of a panel.

Place the polyester shantung flat and put the paper pattern for the middle on top.

Pin in place. Use an air-erase pen to trace the shape.

In this example, a few inches of fabric are left around the shape. This excess helps to hoop the fabric for embroidering.

Print a template of the design from embroidery software.

If you do not have embroidery software that makes templates, Wilcom's TrueSizer is a free program to use.

Place the design template in the center of the drawn shape. Mark the center point as well as the vertical and horizontal axis lines.

Spray the cutaway stabilizer with a quick shot of temporary adhesive, then smooth the fabric on top.

Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together, aligning the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.

Load the design to the machine and move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point.

Embroider the design.

After embroidering, trim away the excess stabilizer. Leave about 1/2" of stabilizer around the design.

Using the top pattern piece, trace the shape onto the polyester shantung or suede cloth and cut out the shape.

Lay the embroidered middle piece flat with the right side facing up. Align the top fabric piece on the top middle piece, right sides together. The bottom edge of the top piece should be aligned with the top edge of the middle piece.

Pin in place. Sew a 1/2" seam along the pinned edge; press while using a pressing cloth.

Top-stitch a 1/8" seam along the seam you just pressed.

To prepare the back fabric piece, lay the assembled top and middle piece on top of the twill.

Pin in place, and cut around the shape.

Remove the top and middle piece and set it aside.

The next step is to pin the ribbons. Place the twill flat with the right side facing up. Cut four 12" lengths of 1/4" to 5/8" wide ribbon.

Measure and mark 4 1/2" down along the side edges, starting at the top corners. Measure and mark up 4 1/2" along the side edges, starting at the bottom corners.

Pin one of the ribbon pieces at each mark, with 1/2" of the ribbon extending out past the outer edge of the fabric. The ribbon pieces should face inward.

Pin the ribbon in place at the center of the fabric to prevent the ribbon tails from being sewn over later on.

Align the top and middle piece on top of the back piece, right sides together.

Pin in place, and sew a 1/2" seam along the side and top edges. The ribbons are sewn in at this point.

Leave the bottom edge open for turning.

Turn the fabric right side out. Remove the pins. Press the seams with a pressing cloth.

Turn the fabric of the bottom opening in 1/2" and press with
a pressing cloth.
