All-Around Oven Mitt

Free project instructions to make an embroidered wrap-around double oven mitt.

Make an All-Around Oven Mitt and have two oven mitts in one!

This double oven mitt is easy to slip on for twice the protection, and because the two mitts are connected, that second mitt is always right there when you need it.

Hang it over the oven door handle or on a hook (it has a loop) for an attractive embroidered addition to kitchen decor, too.

Read on for project instructions to make an attractive and practical double oven mitt!

I embellished my All-Around Oven Mitt with the medium sizes of Majolica Bird 2 and Majolica Bird 3. A wide variety of designs would look fabulous on a double oven mitt! Hats Off to the Chef designs, Cafe Retro designs, and Suzani Garden designs are all excellent choices for this project.

Begin by preparing the pattern piece. Lay an 8 1/2" in diameter object onto the paper and align it with one of the short ends.  Trace the shape along the sides of the paper only.

Cut around the shape. This rounds off one end of the paper.

To make the outer pocket pieces (I will start with the right pocket), first pin the pattern piece onto the quilted cotton fabric with the rounded end facing to the right. With an air-erase pen or other marking tool, trace the shape.

Next, create a paper template of the designs by printing them at full size using embroidery software. If you are new to using templates for design placement, see this step-by-step tutorial.

Center the template within the shape by measuring equal distances in between the center point of the template and the outer edges of the shape (side to side and top to bottom). With an air-erase pen or other marking tool, poke a hole in the center of the template and mark the fabric. Also mark the horizontal and vertical axis points.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks.

Spray a piece of medium weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so that the needle is directly aligned with the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design. When the design has finished, trim away the excess stabilizer on the backside of the embroidery.

Cut out the shape. Then, cut a piece of the print cotton fabric and the Insul-bright a bit larger than the embroidered pocket piece. Lay the print cotton fabric flat, wrong side facing up.  Align the Insul-bright on top of the print fabric. Then, lay the embroidered pocket piece on top of the Insul-bright, right side facing up, pin in place and cut around the shape.

Cut a piece of the bias tape quilt binding a bit longer than the straight edge of the pocket pieces. Wrap the tape around the straight edge, pin in place, and sew a seam along the inner edge of the tape. Also sew a 1/4" seam around the raw edges of the fabric (to tack the layers together).

R
epeat the embroidering, layering, and assembling process to prepare the left pocket, but when tracing the pattern piece, rotate it so that the rounded edge faces to the left.

To prepare the back piece, pin the pattern piece onto the quilted cotton fabric (on one end) with the rounded edge facing towards the left. Trace the shape. Remove the pattern piece and using a straight edge, draw lines 10" out from the inner corners of the shape. The lines should continue out from the straight edges along the top and bottom of the shape.

Rotate the pattern piece so that the rounded edge is on the right and align the corners of the pattern with the ends of the lines you just drew. Pin the pattern piece in place and trace the shape.

Cut a piece of the print cotton fabric, the Insul-bright, and the cotton batting at bit larger than the shape you just drew. Layer the pieces together and place the quilted cotton fabric (the piece with the traced shape) on top of all the layers. Pin all the layers in place and cut out the shape (cut through all the layers at once).

Separate all the layers. Then, lay the Insul-bright piece flat. Align the cotton batting on top of the Insul-bright, and then align the quilted cotton piece on top of the cotton batting with the right side facing up. Pin the layers in place and sew a 1/4" seam around the entire shape.

Lay the back piece flat with the quilted cotton side facing up. Align the assembled pocket pieces with the ends of the back piece, rounded edges together, and with the pocket pieces wrong side up (embroidered side down). Pin the pocket pieces in place.

Align the print cotton fabric piece on top of the pockets, wrong side facing up. Pin all the layers together and sew a 1/2" seam along the outer edges of the fabric, leaving about 7" open along the top edge for turning. Turn the fabric and the pockets right side out. Turn the fabric of the opening in 1/2" and press.

To prepare the loop, cut a piece of the print fabric to 2" wide by 6" high. Fold the outer long edges in to meet in the center of the fabric and press. Then, fold the long folded edges together and press. Sew a 1/8" seam along each long edge.

Form the fabric into a loop and insert it in between the fabric layers at the top center of the opening. Pin in place and sew a 1/4" seam along the top edge to close the opening and secure the loop. And your oven mitt is complete!

An All-Around Oven Mitt is a handy, double-protective kitchen mitt. Embroidery on the top of each mitt makes it beautiful, too. Bakers and chefs will appreciate its attractiveness and convenience!
