A template, or printout of a design, is an excellent tool to help with placement.

Print a template of the design from your embroidery software.
If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is
a free program to use.

Lay the dish towel flat. Place the template so the bottom is 1" above the bottom of the towel, centered between the two sides.

Mark the center point, as well as the horizontal and vertical axis lines.

Use cutaway stabilizer when embroidering on towels.

If the towel is terrycloth or waffle weave, add a piece of light weight water-soluble stabilizer on top, too. Placing a piece of water-soluble stabilizer on top ensures that the stitches won't get lost in the texture of terrycloth or waffle weave.

Hoop all three layers (cutaway stabilizer, towel, and water-soluble stabilizer) together, lining up the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.

Embroider the design.

After embroidering, cut the excess stabilizer away from the back. Leave about 1/2" around the design.

Tear the water-soluble stabilizer away from the front, too.
