Delightful (and defrightful!) decor for October 31 is a snap with this too-cute-to-spook project. Classic Halloween designs embroidered onto organza and wrapped around candles, candy jars, canisters, and more will add a boo-tiful look to your Halloween decorations.

Project Needs & Notes

- Glass jar, pillar candle, or battery-operated flameless candle
- 1/4 yard polyester organza
- Water-soluble stabilizer (Sulky Ultra Solvy or Vilene)
- Air-erase pen
- Modge Podge (water-based glue and sealer, glossy finish)
- Brush for applying glue
- Nylon string
- Decorative trim and fabric glue

Designs featured in this tutorial include X2610, Build-a-Jack-o-Lantern Pack. Designs that are light and small work well on polyester organza.

Begin by measuring the jar or candle to determine the size design.

A design that is 4" x 4" will fill the space nicely in this example.

Wrap the organza around the jar.

Cut the fabric, a
llowing 1" of excess at the back, and a couple of inches of excess at the top and bottom.

Three designs were used together to make a jack-o-lantern's face.

A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool to plan where to stitch.

Print a template of the design from your embroidery software.
If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is
a free program to use.

Arrange the template so it's in the center of the organza.

Use an air-erase pen to mark the center point, as well as the vertical and horizontal axis lines on the organza.

Remove the template and draw lines connecting the marks.

Hoop the organza with a piece of water-soluble stabilizer, lining up the marks on the fabric with the marks on the hoop.

You can place the stabilizer on the bottom if you wish, or on top of the organza. Placing the water-soluble stabilizer on top gives the embroidery foot a smooth surface to glide over.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point.

Embroider the design.

After the design has finished, trim the excess stabilizer away.

Also, trim away any long, loose threads.

The stabilizer's packaging will have instructions for removal. Generally the instructions call for soaking the stabilizer away in hot water from the tap.

Air-dry, and press.

After the organza is dry, it's time to add it to the jar.

Lay the jar on its side and brush the front and sides with Modge Podge.

Position
jar with the lettering at the back so that the embroidery can lay as flat as possible at the front.

Then, with the embroidery aligned on the front, press the fabric in place.

F
lip the jar over, brush the back with glue. Press the fabric in place.

Add more glue along the edge of the fabric and press the overlapping fabric on top.

B
rush the entire outer surface with glue (brush over the top of the embroidery as well).

The glue will have a white, cloudy appearance at first, but will dry clear and shiny.

Allow the glue to dry for about 5 to 10 minutes. Then, gently work out any bubbles in the fabric by pressing them with your finger tips.

The fabric will not lay completely flat -- this is part of the textured look the fabric will take on (there will be small bubbles and creases in the fabric).

A
fter the glue dries a bit longer and the fabric is not wet, trim the fabric at the top and bottom edges.

Add decorative trim by adding a few drops of fabric glue onto the fabric and then pressing the trim in place.

Also, to keep the fabric nice and tight just under the top lip, while the glue is still a bit wet, tie nylon cord around the jar and tie it tight into a bow.

A
fter the glue has dried completely, remove the cord and the fabric will stay tight around the jar.

The design used in this demonstration is actually three different designs from the Build-a-Jack-o-Lantern pack. The eyes, nose, and mouth are separate designs.

The designs can be embroidered one at a time, or they can be merged together to make one design.

Here are the general steps on merging designs using the embroidery software Embird as an example:

Open one design in Editor mode. Click "file" and "merge" , and then use the "merge" tool to select the second design.

Repeat for the third design so that all three designs are in the workspace.

Use these wraps to update a candle, Mason jar, or canister for Halloween. Or, choose different colors and designs to make variations for other holidays and special events, too.
