Project Needs & Notes

- Dish towel or hand towel
- Medium-weight cutaway stabilizer

-
Lightweight water-soluble stabilizer
- Air-erase pen or other marking tool
- Large or extra-large grommets (sometimes
  called "eyelets") and
grommet tool
- Craft knife and cutting pad
- Large "D" rings and pliers (optional)
- Carabiner (optional)

Start with fingertip towels that are 11" x 18".

A template is a printout of a design, and it's an excellent tool to use when planning where to stitch.

Print a template of the design from your embroidery software.
If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is
a free program to use.

Arrange the template on the towel until it's where you want to stitch the design.

Then, mark the center point, as well as the vertical and horizontal axis lines.

Here a dressmaker's pencil is used to make the marks.

Hoop the towel with a piece of medium-weight cutaway stabilizer on the bottom, and water-soluble stabilizer on top.

When hooping, line up the marks on the towel with the marks on the hoop.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the design.

Move the hoop so the needle is right over the center point.

Embroider the design. Use a size 11 or 75/11 embroidery needle.

The water-soluble stabilizer on top helps to keep the stitches from sinking down into the nap of the towel.

After the design has finished, tear the water-soluble stabilizer away from the top.

Use a damp sponge to remove any remaining bits.

Cut the excess stabilizer away from the back. Leave about 1/2" around the design.

The next step is to add a grommet to the top.

Begin by marking where to add the grommet. In this example, the grommet is 3/4" down from the edge, and centered between the sides.

Use a craft knife to make a small X at that mark.

Place the larger grommet piece on the front of the hole. Add the smaller piece to the back, and tap into place.

Add a carabiner.
