Adorn your fireplace with a mantel scarf that spreads the spirit of Christmas (and showcases your favorite machine embroidery!). Fun and festive patterned fabric adds an extra-special touch to this eye-catching holiday decoration.

Project Needs & Notes:

- 2 1/2 yards of print cotton or twill for mantel top and lining
(If your mantel is longer than 78 inches you will need more fabric)
- 1 yard of cotton or twill for triangles (If your mantel is longer than 78 inches you will need more fabric)
- Medium-weight (2.5 ounce) cutaway stabilizer
- Temporary spray adhesive (such as Gunold's KK100)

Designs used in this tutorial include the Christmas Chorus Train Design Pack.

Sizing Notes:
This project was made for a mantel that is 78" long, but can be adjusted for any size mantel. To adjust the size for your mantel, divide the length of the mantel by 6 (for the 6 triangles).

Our mantel is 78". Divide 78 by 6 for a measurement of 13", which will be the top width for each triangle. Then make each triangle 12" long to accommodate the designs.

Using an air-erase pen, draw a triangle on the fabric that is 14" wide at the top and 13" in length.

Draw a vertical line through the center of the triangle, and prepare the template.

A template, or printout of a design, is an excellent tool to help with placement. Print a template of the design from your embroidery software.

If you do not have embroidery software, Wilcom's TrueSizer is
a free program to use.

Center the template within the triangle, 5" above the bottom point of the triangle. Mark the center point and vertical and horizontal axis lines.

Next, cut out two mantel top pieces.

I used the measurements of our mantel (78"x8") and added 1/2" seam allowance to all four sides. This made the pieces 79" x 9".

Lay your first mantel piece out with the right side facing up.

Line up your triangles along one long side, matching the open side of the triangles to the edge of the fabric.

Lay the other mantel piece directly on top with the right side facing down and pin into place.

Sew a 1/2" seam along the long side you lined your triangles up to and the two short sides.

Do not sew a seam on the long side of the mantel piece near the points of the triangles.

When you are done sewing, turn the mantel scarf right side out and press.

Fold in the edges of the open side 1/2" and press.

Stitch a 1/4" seam along that edge to close it.
