"In-the-Hoop Floral Pot Holders" - Request of the Week -
5/14/08
Carol from Virginia requested spring
and summer pot holders. She and her sisters
love to cook, and they all enjoy the shape of the
pot holders, which store so well
when not in use. Carol also mentioned that the pot
holders are easy to mail, as
she has sisters in Florida, Arizona, and Ohio.
Thanks for the suggestion, Carol! |

Rooster Silhouette" - Request of the
Week - 5/07/08 |
|
|
 |
|
The distinctive shape of a rooster, with its unique
comb and cascading tail feathers, is easily
identifiable within any culture worldwide.
Virginia W. requested a rooster silhouette
design to accompany her rooster and hen kitchen
decor. Starting with her fantastic idea, the
inclusion of the word 'rooster' in languages from around the world adds a wonderful
international flair to the dramatic black and white design. Thank you for the great suggestion,
Virginia!

Nauset Lighthouse - Massachusetts
The Nauset Lighthouse is not only known as a
symbol for Cape Cod Potato Chips, but also as
one
of Cape Cod's most recognizable landmarks.
Barbara S.
grew up a mile from the lighthouse on the Cape.
She says, "I have been looking at the Nauset
lighthouse all my life. I love that lighthouse,
it is a special part of my childhood." Now living in Virginia, she has plans to
make a wall-hanging and
pillows with the lighthouse design for her
family, whom she visits in Massachusetts every
summer.
"Cape Cod is a
little bit of heaven on Earth!"
enthuses Carol.

Old Point Loma Lighthouse -
California
Built in 1854,
Point Loma's light was the highest in the nation at
462 feet. Unfortunately, the light's lofty perch on the point meant it was often shrouded in fog,
rendering it useless to mariners. In 1891, after only a few decades of service, the lighthouse was
declared inactive, and a new metal tower light was constructed at the foot of Point Loma.
Sharon N. wanted this lighthouse for her
sister. She says,
"I
requested the Old Point Loma Lighthouse design to use in a quilt or wall hanging for my sister and her
husband in memory of their honeymoon. My sister had reminisced that shortly after her honeymoon, her husband gave her a charm bracelet with 5 charms representing
special life-changing events in their relationship. One of the charms was Point Loma Lighthouse,
representing their honeymoon in San Diego, CA. I know that my sister considers the bracelet one of her
most cherished and sentimental gifts from her husband." |

West Quoddy Lighthouse - Maine
Sonja B. wrote in with a
request of this distinctive striped lighthouse and
included some interesting facts too. She explains, "West Quoddy Lighthouse is my favorite. I was
born in Maine, but moved to Oklahoma at the age of three. However, my mother's family still
lives close to this lighthouse. West Quoddy
Lighthouse is the most eastern point of the United States. It was built in 1807 and rebuilt in 1858. The West Quoddy Head Light is most
remembered
by its bright bands of red and white (six of each). Its flashing white light every fifteen seconds
would tell sea fairing men their location. West Quoddy Light got its "West" name from being west of
East Quoddy Head Light (which is nearby in Canada)." |

Holland Harbor Lighthouse (Big
Red) - Michigan Located
in Ottawa County, Michigan at the entrance of a
channel connecting Lake Michigan
with Lake Macatawa, the Holland Harbor Lighthouse (named Big Red for its
bright crimson exterior) gives access to the city of Holland, Michigan. Carol C.
and her family were introduced to 'Big Red' by their family doctor. An avid painter and photographer of
the scarlet lighthouse, his interest eventually made a fan out of Carol. She has big plans for the
design, including a framed wall-hanging, towels, an apron, shirt, and tote bag. She says, "I
am looking forward to working with 'Big Red!'" |

Biloxi Lighthouse - Mississippi
Within her request for a Biloxi
Lighthouse design, Nia provided some
fascinating facts about the
first cast-iron lighthouse in the South. She says, "The lighthouse itself
has some unique features -
the only lighthouse to stand in the middle of a 4-lane highway, the first
lighthouse to have a woman keeper, and most
recently, withstanding Hurricane Katrina. An
American flag has been draped over the railing as a
tribute. I am anxious to use the Biloxi
Lighthouse on a pillow and shirt for my daughter's birthday as she was born in Biloxi,
Mississippi." |

Round Island Lighthouse - Michigan
Both Alberta L. and
Donna H. have had requests to embellish projects
with realistic lighthouses. Wanting to use them to
create nautical items and quilts, the Round Island
Lighthouse design is a great choice! Built in1896, the Round Island
Lighthouse marks the channel between Round Island and Mackinac Island - the shortest distance from northern Lake Huron to the Straits of Mackinac
Island. Originally equipped with a
Fourth Order Fresnel lens, a lens commonly used
on the Great Lakes, the lamp showed steady white
with a flash of red every twenty seconds. Because
shipping ceased during the winter, this lighthouse
was dark part of the year. |

"Sock Monkeys" - Request of the Week -
4/2/08
The
adorable and iconic Sock Monkey started to pop up in households
in the 1950's. Made from Nelson's Knittings "De-Tec-Tip" red
heeled socks, the monkeys were part of a stuffed animal
craze that swept through the United States and Europe. Relatively easy to
make, soon the
red-lipped monkeys were a fixture in nurseries and playrooms across the
country. Throughout
the years, their popularity hasn't waned, and they are currently
enjoying an even larger
resurgence! And, with their long arms and legs, and sweet smile, it's easy to see why!
Susan M. and her daughters are
long-time fans of sock monkeys and were looking for designs
of the charming fellow. Says Susan, "When my two oldest daughters were
born, a good friend
made them each an old-fashioned sock monkey, and hand-embroidered the
girls' names on the monkeys' caps. Those "babies" are now
22- and 21-years old and their sock monkeys have become
heirlooms that they will pass to their children. We're still
quite a ways from that blessed event, but I would love to
make them baby quilts with sock monkey designs. Nothing like
planning ahead!" |

says, "My
mother passed away recently and
my niece is going to
have a baby
soon. I would love to make a

remembrance quilt. My mother
predicted a new great grandchild
would be born after she was gone
to carry on." What a wonderful

"Lace Doilies" - Request of the Week -
3/12/08 |
Dawn Y. was looking for large hoop lace doilies
to fill a 5x7inch (180x130mm) hoop. Working
from her idea, we devised multi-piece doilies that

are available in two different sizes -- the large
fits a 5 x 7 hoop, the small a 4 x 4 hoop. But
once they're pieced together, the large doily has a
diameter of 10 1/2 inches, and the small
size has a diameter of 7 1/2 inches!
These lace doilies are designed with a vintage

motifs. Gorgeous centerpieces and table
accents! Thank you for the lovely, lacy suggestion,
Dawn.

"Quick-Stitch Baby Characters II" - Request of the Week -
2/20/08
|
|
Using designs from the
first
Quick-Stitch
Baby Character Design Pack, Elaine created a
zoo-
themed baby quilt. Since her quilt had 18
blocks, she repeated a few of the designs. Hoping
to create another zoo-themed quilt, she wanted it to
have a total of 18 unique animals, and
requested a
second series of quick-stitch characters. She
says, "I think
that having more
animals in the same quick-stitch
format would be great for making future quilts. Not
only is
the outline satin stitching fast, but the
finished result is softer and more flexible
perfect for
a baby quilt!" Thank you for request, Elaine
-- it's a great one!
Introducing some new,
quick-stitch friends for baby and small tots!
Say hello to diminutive
dinosaurs, adorable animals
and bugs, and vivid vehicles! These jolly
characters can't wait
to introduce themselves to you
and your little ones, and make their home on
blankets, bibs,

"3D Lace Cardinal" - Request of the Week -
2/6/08 |
|
|
|
 |
|
It is fascinating to watch birds
zip and twitter about in backyard bushes and bird
feeders with
fluttering wings, melodic chirps, and
quick movements. But, the birds don't come out
to play everyday. For those slow days, appease
your favorite bird watcher with 3D lace cardinals!
Debi requested this project for her mother,
an avid bird fan. She says of her mother, "She
loves birds,
and has multiple bird feeders to take
care of during the summer!" This free-standing
lace cardinal decorated with intricate swirls and
delicate wings is the perfect match for her!
Debi plans to use
them to hang in windows and for
decorating her mother's holiday tree. Thank
you for the lovely
lace suggestion, Debi!

"In-the-Hoop Coffee Sleeves" - Request of the Week - 1/30/08
|
|
Since coffee seems to be a universally loved
beverage, it is safe to say that almost everyone has
family or
friends who are avid coffee fans. Cathy, Linda,
and Terri all requested in-the-hoop coffee sleeves to make as
gifts for friends, family, and co-workers. Not only are they
more fun than the disposable versions, but they also shield hands
better. Says Terri, "I have used the paper sleeves
in the
convenience stores, and they just aren't protective enough."
Linda also notes that the individuality of the coffee drinker would
be additionally recognized. She says, "I
think the coffee sleeves would make great gifts for co-workers as it
would help everyone to recognize their own
cup and show off their
unique personalities with the different designs."
