Austrian priest Josef Mohr wrote the original German lyrics to "Silent Night" as a poem in 1816.
On Christmas Eve in 1818, Austrian schoolteacher Franz Xaver Gruber composed a melody and guitar accompaniment for the song to be performed that night.
Mohr sang tenor and Gruber sang bass in the first performance of "Stille Nacht," in the Church of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, Austria.
Legend has it the song was written for guitar because the church organ was no longer working.
The "Silent Night" melody was changed slightly to the one we know today in a performance by Austrian folk singers around 1832.
Austria's Silent Night Association promotes the use of Gruber's original melody and researches the song's history.
In Austria, "Silent Night" is considered a national treasure and may not be played publicly before Christmas Eve.
The song has been recorded by more than 300 artists, from Bing Crosby to Mannheim Steamroller.
Today a small white memorial chapel stands on the original site of the Church of St. Nicholas, where "Silent Night" was first performed.
After you stitch out a beautiful "Silent Night" Nativity project, mark your handiwork with this beautiful quilt label. The border and stars echo the look of the blocks, leaving room for your personal information.
