Greeting Card Gallery
Holiday sewing projects may start and stop, and start again, throughout the summer, but now, as fall approaches, we know it's time to get serious.
Forge ahead into holiday planning with new Christmas and Hanukkah card designs. Specially-marked cards can be sewn directly onto cardstock (a heavy weight of paper) and then transformed into your own holiday greeting. Or, sew card-shaped designs onto fabric, and incorporate into a card that bursts with your creativity.
New designs this week feature a colorful and fun variety of Christmas and Chanukah card designs. For those that celebrate a warm-weather Christmas, you'll be delighted to see a saguaro cactus sporting a Santa cap, as well as spicy jalapeno peppers spelling out holiday greetings. Those that celebrate the Festival of Lights will find coordinating gift tags, numbered 1 - 8. And traditional Christmas elements and phrases, like 'Joy to the World,' 'Peace on Earth,' and 'Merry and Bright' can be incorporated into your holiday card. New photo card designs can be sewn directly onto cardstock and then turned into a Christmas or Chanukah greeting with just a few simple steps. Click here for a video tutorial! Putting your own personal touch of embroidery on greeting and gift cards can be a rewarding experience. When you devote your creativity to making embroidered holiday, photo, and gift cards, you'll be giving your friends and family the gift of yourself along with all your good wishes.
Special note: Designs that have the word 'cardstock' in the name can be sewn directly onto cardstock (a heavy weight of paper). Designs that do not have the word 'cardstock' in the name can be sewn onto fabric and then incorporated into a card. All designs can be sewn directly onto fabric. Note that designs that have been digitized for 'cardstock' have a lighter fill, so if sewing on fabric, expect the fabric to peek through some areas of the design. Cardstock can be found in almost any store - if shopping at discount chains (like Target or WalMart) check the scrapbooking or office sections. You can also find cardstock at craft stores, and specialty paper stores. Cardstock that has longer paper fibers will work best.

Happy Hanukkah cards The Jewish tradition of Hanukkah is a holiday that spans eight days. Hanukkah means "dedication" in Hebrew. Also called the Festival of Lights, it celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabees reclaimed it from Syrian-Greek domination in 165 BCE. A joyous holiday, Hanukkah focuses on God's miracles down through the ages. It is not a holy day, but a fun-filled time for families and friends to put aside business and household duties and take time for one another.
This Happy Hanukkah greeting and menorah design can be sewn directly on cardstock.
A happy greeting designed with traditional symbols of Hanukkah and the Jewish faith can be sewn on fabric and applied creatively to card stock.
Hanukkah or Chanukah? While there are preferences, there is no one correct way to precisely translate Hebrew characters to English characters. The sounds are akin to "H" but not equivalent. However you spell it, this happy greeting and menorah design can be sewn directly on cardstock.
Make this handsome Chanukah card by sewing it on fabric and framing it with cardstock.
Hanukkah traditions are rich with stories of the victory and rededication of the Temple that was wrested away from the Syrians. The lighting of the hanukkiyah, a special menorah, commemorates the miracle that the one vessel of sacramental oil found remaining in the Temple, enough for one day, amazingly burned for eight days. On each of eight nights in succession, the family lights one additional candle on the hanukkiyah with the shamash, the "servant" candle in the middle.
Hanukkah is a family-oriented holiday, and in contemporary times, it is customary to give a little gift on each of the eight days, especially to the children. Below are eight card designs (each can be sewn directly onto cardstock) and a coordinating gift tag. Sew the gift tag on fabric, trim, poke a hole through the satin stitch ring, and then affix to a gift with ribbon or raffia.
Also called "Feast of the Maccabees," Hanukkah is celebrated with foods that are cooked in oil, like latkes (potato pancakes) and suganiyot (jelly donuts). Cards numbered 2 - 4 are below, and can be sewn directly onto cardstock.
Each evening as the hanukkiyah is lit, the family says a prayer thanking God for miracles, for His mercy, justice, and protection. Gift tags numbered 2 - 4 are below
At Hanukkah time, children play with a top called the dreidel and sing a traditional song. The sides of this top are inscribed with Hebrew letters that stand for: A Great Miracle Happened There (or "Here" in Israel). Legends have it that when the Greek King of Syria outlawed Jewish rituals, Jews who gathered to study the Torah would use the top as a ploy. If they saw soldiers approaching, they would bring out the driedel and pretend to be gambling. Today it is customary for the children to play the game and to receive gelt (coins as gifts). Cards 5 - 7 are below.
A lunar holiday on the Jewish calendar, Hanukkah varies from year to year. It begins on the 25th of Kislev, the third month in the Jewish year, and lasts eight days. Gift tags 5 - 7 are below.
To some, the act of kindling one additional light on each night, is symbolic of the gradual process of spiritual growth. To others it symbolizes the survival of Judaism. Card and gift tag 8 are below
