Garden of Blessings

Although the origins of Beautiful Savior are not known, some believe that it was sung by German crusaders as they traveled to the Holy Land in the 11th century. Flowers arranged in a wooden pail represent the beauty of creation.

Available in two sizes:
 5.87"X7.34" and 4.87"X6.07"

An English poet and clergyman named John Newton wrote the lyrics to Amazing Grace. His personal story is reminiscent of Jonah's. When he was a member of the Royal Navy and a sailor, he was caught in a terrible storm. Newton called out to God for mercy, and that moment marked his spiritual journey. Shortly after that event, he left his career as "sailor" and began studying theology. Newton wrote Amazing Grace as a poem or chant to be the focus of a New Year's Day sermon in 1773. Sixty years later the poem was set to the music that we know today.

Available in two sizes:
 5.86"X7.50" and 4.86"X6.21"

This hymn speaks of the comfort and serenity that prayer can bring when life becomes a little too unruly. The lyrics read:

In seasons of distress and grief, My soul has often found relief, And oft escaped the tempter's snare, By thy return, sweet hour of prayer.

Available in three sizes:
 6.33"X7.80" and 5.86"X7.24" and 4.85"X5.99"

Cecil Frances Humphreys Alexander was born in Dublin, and found her calling in writing hymns and poems. Along with writing the lyrics to All Things Bright and Beautiful, she also wrote the popular Christmas song, Once in Royal David's City. Alexander was an avid reader, and was inspired by Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. That poem contains this passage:

He prayeth best, who loveth best; All things great and small; For the dear God who loveth us; He made and loveth all.

That sentiment worked its way into the first verse of Alexander's most famous hymn:

All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all.

Available in three sizes:
5.23"X7.80" and 5.87"X8.77" and 4.59"X6.85"

Psalm 23 is one of the most well-known psalms. For centuries it has brought peace, comfort, and joy to those with troubled hearts and heavy burdens. Portions of the passage have been set to different scores; the most traditional version was created by the Scottish Psalter in the mid-1800s. The lyrics contain promise, assurance, and hope. The flowers in this pail spring with that same promise and hope.

Available in two sizes:
 5.86"X7.79" and 4.87"X6.44"

Lamentations 3:22 reads: It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. And when Thomas Chisolm read those words in 1923, he wrote a hymn that celebrated God's faithfulness in his own life. He was inspired to transform the Bible verse into this hymn:

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with thee, Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not, As thou has been, thou forever will be.

Available in three sizes:
6.46"X7.80" and 5.87"X7.10" and 4.87"X5.87"

Blissful Blooms

Flowers are paired with spirited words, resulting in a peaceful and soothing medley. This design brings to mind Psalm 27, verse 4:

One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, And to inquire in His temple.

The word "Beauty" below is filled with colorful and delicate roses.

Available in two sizes:
 9.34"X4.17" and 6.87"X3.07"

The word "Savior," with a colorful lily. The letters of the word contain peeks and glimpses of a field of lilies.

Available in two sizes:
 9.33"X4.86" and 6.84"X3.56"

The Bible is filled with passages and stories about grace -- an undeserved and unexpected gift from God. In Genesis, Noah finds grace in the eyes of the Lord. In Exodus, Moses prays "...if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way..." The Psalms contain promises that "...the Lord God is a sun and shield; The Lord will give grace and glory."

Below, the word "Grace" is filled with daisies, and accompanied by a white flower.

Available in two sizes:
 9.41"X5.17" and 6.89"X3.78"

There's a passage in Proverbs that inspires many stitchers and crafters: "She seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands."

The design below features a beautiful flax flower, accompanied by the word "Peace."

Available in two sizes:
 9.33"X5.69" and 6.86"X4.19"

Meditation and prayer are sources of joy and contentment for spiritual people. A favorite prayer of strength and joy is the prayer of Hannah from 1 Samuel, Chapter 2:

My heart rejoices in the Lord; My horn is exalted in the Lord. I smile at my enemies, Because I rejoice in Your salvation. No one is holy like the Lord, For there is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.

In this design, the word "Prayer" is accompanied by an aster.

Available in two sizes:
 9.42"X4.69" and 6.86"X3.42"

When one is looking for a bright flower, one looks no further than a Gerbera daisy. These flowers are known for the hearty nature, and their bright, vibrant hues.

Available in two sizes:
 9.41"X4.85" and 6.88"X3.54"

The Bible is filled with stories of trials and tribulations, and the enduring and rewarding quality of faith. Abraham, Moses, Job, Mary, Joseph, Peter, Paul -- their stories begin with faith, and serve as an example to us. This design features the word "Faith," and a field of irises fill the letters.

Available in two sizes:
 9.32"X5.86" and 6.87"X4.31"

The word "carnation" can be traced to the Latin word "incarnacyon," which means "God-made flesh." Although carnations today can be found in a variety of colors, the original color was a fleshy pink color. One legend reports that the first carnations sprung from Mary's tears. Since then, these flowers have symbolized a mother's pure and lasting love.

Available in two sizes:
 9.41"X5.87" and 6.81"X4.24"

The Gardens of Eden and Gethsemane are the two famous ones in the Bible. The word "garden" also represents heaven. In the Parable of the Mustard Seed, Jesus taught that the Kingdom of God is "like a mustard seed, which a man took and put in his garden; and it grew and became a large tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches."

In this design, the word "Garden" is accompanied by peonies.

Available in two sizes:
 9.33"X4.34" and 6.86"X3.19"

Psalm 36 says, "How precious is Your loving kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light."

This design features the word "Precious," along with beautiful violets.

Available in two sizes:
 9.33"X4.10" and 6.85"X3.01"

Perching with Praise

The designs below will bring a sweet melody to your embroidery projects. Faithful little birds tweet familiar hymns and songs. The designs feature colorful birds, and fragments of lyrics and scores. Wonderful on book covers, totes, quilts, wall hangings, and more!

Ave Maria, Gratia Plena is Latin for "Hail Mary, full of grace." The prayer is centuries old, and the song was written in the late 1700s by Franz Schubert.

As well as being sung by parishioners in churches, Amazing Grace has also been recorded by famous singers, such as Aretha Franklin, Rod Stewart, and Johnny Cash. Cash oftentimes sang the song in prisons, and said, "For the three minutes that song is going on, everybody is free. It just frees the spirit and frees the person."

 5.86"X8.09" and 4.86"X6.69"

In 1855, Joseph Scriven was living in Canada, and his mother was living in Ireland. She missed him terribly, and Scriven wrote a poem for her. That poem, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, was set to music a decade later.

Saint Francis of Assisi believed in the power of music, and championed the idea of music being incorporated into worship services. Near the end of his life, Saint Francis lost his eyesight, so music became even more important to him. A year before his death, he wrote a religious pamphlet called Canticles of the Sun, which contained the lyrics to All Creatures of Our God and King.

Susan Bogert Warner and Anna Bartlett Warner were 19th century writers who focused in religious and children's fiction. The two of them teamed up to write Jesus Loves Me, which originally appeared as a poem in one of Susan's books.

The lyrics to Beautiful Savior are pastoral, with references to Jesus as the "Ruler of nature," and fairer than the meadows and woodlands. The lyrics are perfectly paired with birds and budding leaves, representing the magnificence of God's creation.

The hymn Holy Holy Holy was written in the early 1800s for the Trinity Sunday celebration. The three-time use of the word "Holy" represents the idea of a triune God: Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

No one knows who the author is of Just a Closer Walk with Thee. The earliest recording was in 1941 by the Selah Jubilee Singers in New York City. Other famous artists who have sung this song include Elvis Presley and Tennessee Ernie Ford.

Rock of Ages was written by Reverend Augustus Montague Toplady in 1763. When traveling in England, Toplady was caught in a violent storm, and took shelter in a gorge. The "Rock of Ages" where Toplady took shelter can be visited by visitors to Burrington Combe.

Maltbie Davenport Babcock loved to walk in nature, and living in New York near Lake Ontario, he had plenty of scenic views. He liked to tell his wife that he was "going out to see the Father's world." After Babcock died, his wife published his personal writings and titled it Thoughts for Every-Day Living. This compilation contained the poem My Father's World.

Lift High the Cross may have been based on a verse from John, Chapter 12: "And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."

How Great Thou Art has its roots in Sweden. It's based on a Swedish poem written by Carl Gustav Boberg, and the words are set to the melody of a Swedish folk song. Boberg was overwhelmed by the beauty and majesty found in nature, and was led to Psalm 8: "When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?"

A Mighty Fortress Is Our God is one of Martin Luther's most famous hymn. Written in the 1500s, the words are inspired by Psalm 46: "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
