The Lovely Ladies of Art Nouveau The work of Czech artist Alphonse Mucha is synonymous with the Art Nouveau style. In the late 1800s, his breathtaking illustrations for magazines and posters featuring Sarah Bernhardt captured the art scene throughout Europe. After World War I, he designed postage stamps and bank notes for the newly created Czechoslovakia. Settling in Prague, he helped decorate landmarks throughout the city. Four designs, inspired by Mucha's refined decorative elements, feature detailed framework and beautiful young, women in flowing gowns, their luscious hair rippling in waves of audacious curls. Art Nouveau

The end of the 19th century in Paris was a dynamic and exciting period. The technological innovations of the industrial revolution offered myriad ways of infusing design into everyday life. Design flourished everywhere, even in the applied arts of ironwork and glass. But it was in illustration, printed posters
and magazines, that the style known as Art Nouveau was most keenly felt.

Art Nouveau in Glass

In the midst of the pre-modernist era, artists, designers, and architects were finding ways to express themselves in every media from furniture to ornate ironwork to glass. The "modern style" took the
1900 Paris Expedition by storm, triumphing in every design category. In the U.S., architects Wright and Sullivan gave the movement their own concepts, whereas Tiffany artistry fully embraced it.

Art Nouveau Peonies
As you may see, this week's request stimulated a whole week's worth of creative artistry. Writing to request a peony design in Art Nouveau style, Mary said, "I just love art nouveau designs of any type, and I have grown peonies all of my adult life (that's a lot of years) and have numerous varieties from vintage to gorgeous newer ones. I am attaching a photo of 'Burma Ruby' that is almost fluorescent!"

"I would like to make an art nouveau quilt of pieced blocks with a peony embroidered in the block center...set into an art nouveau frame," she said. "I design my quilts with Electric Quilt v6 which has drawing capability. This would be a wall quilt, which I would keep for myself!"
