Composites of Northwoods Animals

We begin our walk in the woods with magnificently realistic thread art depicting the spirit of a moose, loon, wolf and bear. These designs showcase the solitude and luscious landscapes where each animal makes its home, creating snapshots of the majesty and wonder tucked away in nature's playground.

Spirit of the Moose
He thrives in the peaceful coolness of a wooded glen, and stops midstream for a drink. This serene scene features the mighty creature, who is often recognized by its large size and dramatic antlers. The moose, often referred to as "King of the Forest," is a national animal for Canada, Sweden and Norway.

Spirit of the Loon
These dashing birds are at home in the water with an uncanny ability to swim and dive. In many cultures birds, as spirits of the air, symbolize the soul, communication with higher powers, a transcending of the physical world, and freedom.

Spirit of the Wolf
A distant relative of domestic canines, this handsome creature also has its place in different cultural folklore, literature, and film. The howl of wolves is a fascinating and wonderful call of the wild used to keep the communion of the pack together as they roam for food. In Native American cultures, the
spirit of the wolf was called upon to be a teacher, leader, and pathfinder.

Spirit of the Bear
Quite the mighty creature in size, stature, and reputation, bears can be intimidating when met on
a mountain trail. Paradoxically, in American Indian legends, although the bear spirit was a mighty protector, the bear was also respected for having a gentler side. The bear was assigned the
spiritual contemplation from which noble or foretelling dreams arise.

Northwoods Decor

Our walk in the woods continues with new stencil designs. Stenciling is as old as cave dwelling art
and as young as the arts and crafts revival of the 21st century. The art of cutting a template to repeat an exact pattern in ink or paint has long been used as a method of decorating interior walls, furniture, and fabrics. It is a simple art form that reveres tradition.

Ever so much easier than applying paint to a template, the thread art in the following six Northwoods themes is inspired by stencil patterns. The edges of the elements in these designs are defined by white space, as if their "fills" resulted from a template cut from surrounding material. All the white
areas will take on the color of your background fabric as the solid colors bring form to shape.

Northwoods Bear Feature
Details abound in this template-like thread art. The shape of the bear with fresh-caught fish emerges
as she wades through a forest stream flanked by wilderness pine trees. Create a striking motif for a woodsy retreat with matching designs for pillows or chair cushions, wall hangings, and towels.

Chickadee Feature
The little black mask and stout little body are familiar characteristics of the friendly little

Loon Feature
Loons nest at the very edge of calm and undisturbed waters. Their plaintive call, diving ability,

Mallard Feature
The mallard duck, with its distinctive markings, is a popular and welcome visitor at lakes and

A Walk in the Woods -- Leaves
As we walk through the woods today, listen to the wind rustling through the leaves, and look
around to see all of nature's beautiful colors on display. See the delicate, intricate structures
of the leaves. These leaf and branch designs will make clever quilts and wall hangings.

American Beech
The beech tree grows best in mountain coves with other hardwoods. Its edible nuts, easily
recognized by their prickly husks, are excellent food for wildlife. The saw-toothed leaves turn
bright yellow in autumn and remain on the tree over winter. Beech trees grow to 80 feet tall
with broad round crowns. Their wood makes excellent furniture and flooring.

White Ash
Northern hardwood forests are home to the familiar leaves in sets of seven. And sports fans may recognized this tree as the sturdy medium for baseball bats. These rapid-growth trees provide

Paper Birch
Considered to be one of the most attractive North American landscaping trees, the paper birch once was used by American Indians for building canoes. The birch's triangular dark green leaves have saw-toothed edges, and the leaves turn to sunny yellow in early autumn. The fruits of the birch are mature seed "catkins" that are two to three inches long.

Norway Pine
Its name may be deceptive as the tree isn't native to Norway, and many may know it as the Red Pine, however, this hearty evergreen brightens our cold winter days with its greenery splashed again the white snow. We admire it year round, especially with its intricate and nearly symmetrical pine cones, and its slender and graceful needles.

Sugar Maple
Renowned for its brilliant autumn colors, the sugar maple is a dense shade tree native to New England and the Upper Midwest. It is tapped for its syrup, which we relish on our pancakes and waffles. The fruit is the two-winged samara. Maple wood makes fine furniture and musical instruments. The slow-growing and long-lived sugar maple can attain 40 to 80 feet in height.

Red Oak
Known for its strength and brilliant fall colors, the Northern red oak also dresses up for spring. Its new leaves have a reddish tinge. Its leaves range from 4 to 8 inches long, with 7 to 11 spiny-tipped lobes. This common oak produces a multitude of seeds -- capped acorns -- which are a feast for wild animals.

Design Request of the Week: Northwoods Lace

Carla, an embroiderer in Maine, wrote to say that she has a camp on a local lake there. "I have
a fondness for anything with a Northwoods theme," she said. Her request is for woodsy lace
bookmarks. "My best friend has a camp near me and is an avid reader. My sister-in-law was born in Maine and moved to the northwest, but collects anything that reminds her of Maine," she explained.

"It is because of these two people that I want to have a Northwoods themed book mark to make as a special gift," she said. How appropriate for this week's theme!
