Historic Lighthouses

There's nothing like a lighthouse to evoke the romance and adventure of journeys at sea. Admiralty Head Lighthouse, Washington
Located in Fort Casey State Park on Whidbey Island in Washington, the Admiralty Head Light was the last brick lighthouse designed by German architect Carl Leick. Its light was extinguished in 1922, but the lighthouse receives visitors 10 months a year for tours and weddings.

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, Oregon
Perched on a rock a mile off of the Oregon shore, the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse has withstood the Pacific's fierce storms since 1881. The tiny island is now part of a wildlife refuge for the sea lions and birds that make it their home.

Harbour Town Lighthouse, South Carolina
Completed in 1970, this is the first privately financed lighthouse built since the early 1800s. It's a popular attraction for visitors to Hilton Head, South Carolina, with red and white stripes encircling its smooth, modern design.

Cape Neddick Lighthouse, Maine
An iconic New England lighthouse, the Cape Neddick Lighthouse (commonly known as the "Nubble Light") in York, Maine, has stood on a steep rocky island since 1879. The interior is decorated with tiny brass images of the lighthouse itself. Along with the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal, its photo was sent into space on the Voyager spacecraft as an iconic example of an American lighthouse.

Big Sable Point Lighthouse, Michigan
The last Great Lakes lighthouse to give up wicks for electricity, the Big Sable Point Lighthouse on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan is one of the tallest lighthouses in Michigan. The aging brick tower was encased in steel in 1900, giving this light its unique look.

Cape Canaveral Lighthouse, Florida
The only fully operational lighthouse owned by the United States Air Force, the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse has a silhouette like the rockets that are launched from the cape. It was originally built closer to the shore, but it was moved further inland in 1894 to protect it from erosion by the sea.
