NEW THIS WEEK:

Bistro Coffee & Tea

Let's meet for coffee...
             Come over for tea...

Every day, great ideas are discovered and wonderful friendships are built over a good cup or two or moreof our favorite beverages. The warm informality of these get-togethers just seems to make for easy conversation. Fancy or plain, planned or spur-of-the-momentevents that revolve around coffee and tea are as cordial and affirming as the beverages in our cups.

And, in the hospitality of our own homes, we can add to this natural warmth by making even an impromptu gathering a special occasion. A few creative embroidered conversation pieces, paired with our beverages of choice, are a fabulous way to say, "I'm so glad you came."

For those who know it well, coffee can be a wondrous beverage, capable of dispensing with sleepiness for the weary. Tales of this mysterious black and bitter beverage abide in the folklore of many countries. In Yemen, for example, the story goes that a shepherd saw goats eating reddish berries and observed that they began acting restless and excited. He reported this to a monk, who boiled the berries, and discovered the tasty brew and its stimulating effects.

New coffee and tea designs make wonderful accents to kitchen towels, tea cozies, linen napkins, and also make wonderful embellishments to a caffeine-lover's wardrobe.

When we want our coffee really strong, we turn
to the espresso machine.
Although first invented in France in 1822, the high-pressure version was invented by an Italian in 1946. When the Faema Company developed the first pump-driven machine in 1960, you could hear the familiar whoosh in coffee shops all over the world.
What could be finer than chocolate? Combine  espresso with chocolate syrup and a liberal amount of foamy steamed milk, and we are really in heaven. Cafe Mocha is best served up in a tall glass mug with time to sit down and savor every rich and creamy sip.

Get your calcium while you super-charge your morning, too. Pronounced ka-fay LAH-tay, this drink is espresso combined with a liberal amount of foamy steamed milk, usually served in a glass mug.    Espresso coffee mixed or topped with steamed milk or cream, came by the name "cappuccino" in Italy, where people thought its colors resembled the habit of a Capuchin friar. The English adopted the term cappuccino in 1948.

A little chit chat, while you drink? A time-honored tradition, this surely began in Italy, where, in the
1800s, coffee was considered an "intellectual beverage." The beverage gave rise to shops where people would gather to drink and converse. Seated at the tables, they would drink, eye each other, and gossip about the other customers, which must have been a key factor in the success of these shops. Such a tradition is very much intact today, and our little flamingo ladies take full advantage of it.
