Hot Air Balloons and Kites
New this week

Up, Up, and Away!

Warm spring breezes and sunshine-filled days have us floating on air, enjoying the wind rushing through our hair as we soar to dizzying heights on balloons and kites.

This week the Embroidery Library is pleased to present new designs that are almost out-of-this world.  A wide range of hot air balloons, from grinning daisies to historical balloons with propellers, are a great way to add bright splashes of color to garments and totes.  Cartoon kites giggle and grin as they ride puffs of wind and soar near the sun.

Value packs of kites and hot air balloons are also available.  As you scroll down the page you'll see value packs for kites and for hot air balloons. Just click on the value pack images to see the designs that are included in the packs.  The hot air balloon design pack includes designs that were previously offered; the kite design pack contains all new designs.

These designs are wonderful on garments, totes, linens, and more! Come fly with us, and enjoy the new designs!

Some see kites as scraps of fabric tied to lightweight, wood frames, to entertain families
on sunny, windy days. But kites have a rich and fascinating history beginning over 2,000
years ago. Legend says that a Chinese farmer tied a string between his hat and his shirt
to keep the wind from taking his hat. That's how the first kite was born.

Kites have played an important role in warfare. In 200 B.C. a Chinese general named Han Hsin
used a kite to defeat a city. He and his troops were working to tunnel under the city walls to
avoid the city's defense systems. Hsin flew a kite from his position to the city walls, and then
reeled it in. He used the string as a tool to plan the length of the tunnels.

Available in two sizes:

In 600 C.E. a Korean general named Gim Yu-sin was losing control of his troops. They had seen a large shooting star soar through the sky, and considered it bad
luck to proceed with the war plans. General Yu-sin used a kite to carry a flame
into the sky, and told his soldiers that it was the star returning to heaven. He and
his troops won their battle.

Available in two sizes:
4.52"x6.80" and 2.5"x3.85"

Kites have also been used in scientific research. Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Wilson
used kites to study the weather. Alexander Graham Bell and the Wright Brothers used
kites to develop the airplane.
