Mexican Talavera

Free Project Instructions!

Talavera pottery is a centuries-old art that developed in Puebla, Mexico. Recognizable by its predominantly blue aspects, this pottery is one Mexico's many beautiful forms of art.

New designs this week explore this magnificent style with pieces that burst with bold blues, golds, and reds. Traditional subject matter, such as birds, butterflies, and flowers are ready to brighten up shirts, jackets, table linens, and towels.

Home decor embellishment packs include squares, sprays, borders, and corners -- everything you need to stitch on placemats, table runners, and linen napkins. Dress up pillow shams, curtains, and quilts with these bright designs with a fiesta flavor.

Dance your way down the page and celebrate this pillar of Mexican heritage. Enjoy these new designs!

Combine the classic sunflower quilt block with bright and sunny fabric and designs to make a stunning placemat. Click here for free project instructions!

This bold border features a dahlia in the center, flanked by blue and orange stylized floral motifs. Delightful as a feature to placemats and table runners, as well as bath towels.

Talavera Elegance

One of our favorite Mexican folktales is about the mythical Cu bird. The Cu bird was very unhappy with his looks -- he had no feathers. A barn owl took pity on the Cu bird, and asked all of the other birds to donate one feather each to the Cu bird.

Available in four sizes:
7.78"X7.78" and 5.85"X5.84" and 4.88"X4.86" and 3.86"X3.86"

In exchange for these feathers, the Cu bird was to be the messenger of the bird council. The Cu bird loved his new plumage, and spent hours and hours every day admiring his feathers and reflection.

Available in two sizes:
5.80"X7.58" and 4.84"X6.33"

One day the eagle, the head of the bird council, asked the Cu bird to send a message to the other birds to come to an important meeting. But the Cu bird saw his reflection in a lake, became distracted by his own beauty, and didn't give the message to the other birds. As punishment, the Cu bird is a nighttime bird, and its magnificent medley of feathers isn't seen. These designs are inspired by that story, with a bird in the center in a nighttime silhouette.

Available in two sizes:
9.31"X4.66" and 6.00"X3.32"

Tail feathers of the Cu bird form a sweet, symmetrical border. Stitched in traditional colors of gold, orange and blue. Experiment with colors to match your personal preference and taste!

Available in three sizes:
9.40"X2.37" and 6.00"X1.57" and 3.85"X1.53"

The corner design (left) is a stunning addition to pockets, napkins, and washcloths. The single Cu bird on the right is a lovely accent when used in conjunction with the above designs.

Available in two sizes:
4.86"X4.86" and 3.86"X3.86"

  Available in one size:
3.20"X2.67"
