Barbeque Party

NEW THIS WEEK - May 3rd, 2006:

Barbeque Party

Summertime vastly expands our opportunities for fun and entertaining. With the whole outdoors waiting for us, we can plan neighborhood picnics, big family gatherings, and parties on the patio or around the pool.

So when the occasional spring shower drops in to dampen the day and nurture your May flowers, just remember that this is a great time to sew up some hot fashions and delightful decorating items for your upcoming summer festivities!

Start with lace! The designs this week feature new and refreshing fruit patterns in freestanding lace to sew for trivets, centerpieces, and coasters. Make a matching gift set or mix the fruit coasters so everyone can identify their own.

Summertime...when the livin' (and cookin') is easy. Keep the kitchen cool by taking the cooking to the patio grill on hot days. And outfit the cook with apron designs suitable for many a personality -- from the "Grill Sergeant" and "Grill Mistress" to the cartoon humor of "Plays with Fire" and "All Fired Up." Many more will delight and entertain.

Tablecloth weights keep picnic linens in place on breezy summer days. Click here for free and easy instructions.

Fresh garden vegetables -- peppers, mushrooms, cucumbers, corn -- colorfully framed in checkers and stars are ready to sew on baskets and totes for those trips to the garden or farmers' market. Perfect, too, for Fourth of July and mid-summer picnics.

Get ready for a sizzling summer of backyard barbecues, and enjoy sewing the designs!

Fruits of Lace
New, refreshing fruit designs in freestanding embroidered lace add a delicate touch to all your
summer entertaining. Use the round designs to create colorful and elegant coasters. The lace
"wedges" can be sewn together to make a centerpiece or trivet. Nine "wedges" make a circle.

Cherry trees, famous for their spring beauty, produce fruit we can enjoy all summer long. Tart cherries for our favorite American pie grow best around the Great Lakes. Traverse City, Michigan, celebrates them in a National Cherry festival at their peak in July. Bing cherries grow best in the Pacific states,
and we must wait a little longer to catch them at their most succulent sweetness.

Nine sections of cherry triangles make a charming
summer centerpiece or trivet for your party table.
Cherry coasters, so elegant with punch
and cocktails.

The pineapple, the fruit we have come to associate with the Hawaiian Islands, has a long history in the Americas. Originally cultivated by natives of the Caribbean Islands, this sweet fruit was served in the best of homes in colonial America and Europe. Reserved for special occasions, it became the symbol of welcome and hospitality.   The image of the pineapple expresses welcome, good cheer, warmth, and gracious gatherings.

Orange citrus is an ancient fruit, native to Southeast Asia. First mentioned in Arabian Sanskrit, citrus plants were brought to Spain by the Moors for medicinal and religious purposes. Thus, the bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) reached Europe by the 1000s. The sweet orange, arriving from India, was planted in Versailles in 1421. Columbus transported oranges to the New World and by 1587 these beautiful trees were thriving in Cuba. In the 1700s, Spanish missionaries established the first California orange groves.   A toast to your health!
Rich in vitamin C, the orange is a natural as the symbol of good health. In Asian cultures, the many-sectioned fruit is also said to provide for good fortune and prosperity, and its sweetness is traditional in signaling long life and love.

In a previous series, the "Grill Master" (below right) design was offered. An embroiderer wrote
and asked for a "grill mistress" design, as her mother-in-law does most of the grilling. Our artists
and digitizers were happy to oblige - and the new "grill mistress" is below, left. The two together
make a wonderful set of "his and her" aprons for a wedding or anniversary gift.

Back-to-Back Fruit Applique
Newton's third law of physics tells us that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This law holds true with new applique designs. Each of the designs on the right are the spitting image of the ones on the left. All laws of physics aside, these designs make every two-sided project (like this week's tablecloth weights) a breeze!
A great way to use little scraps from your stash, the designs stitch up quickly, and the applique adds wonderful detail, color, and depth. Need instructions for working with applique designs? Just click here.
