Sock Monkeys - Request of the Week The adorable and iconic Sock Monkey started to pop up in households in the 1950's. Made from Nelson's Knittings "De-Tec-Tip" red heeled socks, the monkeys were part of a stuffed animal craze that swept through the United States and Europe. Relatively easy to make, soon the red-lipped monkeys were a fixture in nurseries and playrooms across the country. Throughout the years, their popularity hasn't waned, and they are currently enjoying an even larger resurgence! And, with their long arms and legs, and sweet smile, it's easy to see why! Susan M. and her daughters are long-time fans of sock monkeys and were looking for designs of the charming fellow. Says Susan, "When my two oldest daughters were born, a good friend made them each an old-fashioned sock monkey, and hand-embroidered the girls' names on the monkeys' caps. Those "babies" are now 22- and 21-years old and their sock monkeys have become heirlooms that they will pass to their children.
