Pysanka Eggs

Ukraine is known for many things -- sunflowers, poppies, colorful art and textiles, and ultimately, the patient care and crafting of decorated eggs, known as pysanka. Eggs are decorated using a wax batik method. Pysanka is derived from the Ukrainian word pysaty, which means "to write" -- the eggs are written on with beeswax.

In ancient times, the Ukrainian people viewed birds as part of the sun god -- for birds were the only creatures that could get close to the sun. The eggs, however, could be gathered and found by humans, and they were considered to be gifts from the sun god, a magical source of life, and signs of spring, rebirth, and renewal. Eggs were cherished, and over time became beautiful and wondrous forms of art with the pysanka process.
