Herbs of the Bible

NEW THIS WEEK - March 25th, 2009

Herbs of the Bible

Free Project Instructions!

A year ago I came across a wonderful book called Flowers of the Bible and How to Grow Them. That book inspired a series of flower and Bible verse designs that have been turned into stunning and spiritual projects, such as a wall hanging, a book cover, a tote bag, and framed pieces for an anniversary gift and daily inspiration.

The author of that book, Allan Swenson, wrote another book called Herbs of the Bible and How to Grow Them. I found it just as fascinating and inspiring as the first. I'm not blessed with a green thumb, but I'm stitching a Biblical garden with
this week's new designs. They celebrate the "grasses of the field" that nourish us both physically and spiritually, too.

Favorite Bible verses have been paired with traditional herbs, perfect for framing and hanging in the kitchen and dining area. Fresh and colorful designs of sweet, spicy, and savory herbs are perfect for kitchen towels. Pot holders, made right in the hoop, feature herbs that have traveled all the way from the Holy Land to season our soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts.

Use these designs to bring a piece of history and the Holy Land to your home. Spice up kitchen towels, or stitch something sweet for a wedding gift or your place of worship. However you use these new designs, the result will be reflective of the great gifts that abound in nature. Enjoy!

Keep small household items handy with this Hanging Around Organizer. Perfect for storing mail, car keys, seed packets, and other small items. Click

Spirited Stitchin' for the Kitchen

Several herbs are mentioned by name in the Bible. Three favorite verses have been paired
with Biblical herbs and arranged in a beautiful presentation. These large, complex designs
make wonderful framed pieces for your kitchen and dining room, as well as the kitchen and
serving area for your place of worship, too.

Hyssop is an herb that appears in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Psalms, and I Kings. Historically
it was used as a cleanser, and used to purify the temple. This particular verse from Psalms, King
David's prayer for forgiveness, is paired with dill and hyssop.

Available in two sizes:
8.43"X5.85" and 6.85"X4.75"

When the Israelites were wandering in the desert, God sent manna from heaven to sustain
them. In Exodus it's described as being like coriander seed; in Numbers that description is
further detailed with "And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills or beat
it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was as the taste
of fresh oil. And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it."

The verse from Exodus is accompanied by coriander, chamomile, and marjoram.

Available in two sizes:
8.19"X5.87" and 6.74"X4.86"

In Matthew, Jesus speaks of the power of faith. His disciples weren't able to heal a sick child,
and asked Jesus why they weren't able. He replied that they had little faith, and said that even
faith as small as a tiny mustard seed can move mountains. The verse from Matthew is paired
with sage, absinthium, and mustard.

Available in two sizes:
5.85"X8.01" and 4.85"X6.62"

Kitchen Herbs

Since ancient times, the fragrant "grasses of the fields" were used for many purposes:
medicinal, spiritual, and nutritional, too. Familiar kitchen herbs, as well as fragrant ones,
make wonderful embellishments to kitchen towels, curtains, wall hangings, trivets, and
table linens. The name of each herb is included with the design as a separate color
stop, so you can easily eliminate the text if desired.
