Paisley & Jacobean

NEW THIS WEEK - March 22nd, 2006:

Crazy for Paisley
(and Jumpin' for Jacobean!)

Paisley--that pretty, droplet-shape with a twirl--is swirling its way into fashion hearts again as it has been doing for centuries. Paisley never really goes away. It's always welcome, but when it hits the covers of fashion and decorating catalogs, you know it's more than a passing swish.

This week's designs explore the fresh possibilities of traditional paisley patterns and artful Jacobean heirloom embroidery.

Every paisley has its day -- from the rich colors of Asian shawls to the psychedelic colors of the ' 70s. But, here are some new twists and hues to try.
Color your world with a traditional Floral Paisley, go tropical with Fun-loving Flamingos, or sew a delicate garden with the Butterfly motif.

Coordinating designs come in every shape--squares, circles, ovals, rectangles, sprays, corners, and singles. The paisleys just beg to be sewn on every wardrobe and home decorating project you can conjure up.

A pretty paisley pillow and handy pockets --  all in one!  Click here for instructions.

Elaborate Jacobean-inspired designs this week are reminiscent of English krua (crewel), wool yarn embroideries found on heirloom tapestries, garments, and household items dating from the 17th century. Fanciful Butterflies and Hummingbirds and stylized Florals of the Jacobean period form squares, circles, ovals, rectangles, sprays, and corners. The coordinating designs are so versatile, you can embellish a tote one day, decorate a hem or cuff the next, frame a pillow feature with corner designs, or sew designs aplenty on quilt squares, sashes, and borders -- all with one design pack.

Go crazy with paisley, jump for joy with Jacobean, and delight in the designs this week!

Paisley
The paisley pattern has a long and colorful history. Although the characteristic tear-drop design is Asian in origin, the pattern gets its name from the Scottish town of Paisley, famous for the success of its weaving industry. Around 1775, the East India Company introduced woven shawls from Kashmir to Europe. As demand grew for the warm shawls and their rich patterns, European weavers and printmakers were quick to copy them. But in 1805, the inventive weavers of Paisley devised ways to speed production, and the sheer numbers of "Paisley shawls" gave the design its name.

Paisley Floral Design Shapes
When the fascinating tear-drop design combines with vibrant flower power, an explosion of color ignites at your fingertips. Choose the fashion colors of the hour, match the tones of your decor, or hearken back to the paisley decade you most adore.

Jacobean Designs
Beautiful heirloom-like designs are inspired by an English embroidery style popularized during the reign of the Stuarts, particularly James I ("Jacobean" deriving from Jacobus, the Latin form for James). Wealthy women of the 17th century, indulging in the art of embroidery, developed a variety of stitches for making this heavily textured style with krul (wool) yarns on heavy linen. Their designs, distinctly oriental in character, show the influence of the East India Company was having on English society.

Jacobean Floral
These rich designs, with their stylized flowers and exotic shapes, certainly have the look of royalty
and castles about them, but many an English woman embroidered them on bell pulls, cushions,
and on decorative panels to be hung as tapestries and privacy screens, even in smaller homes.

Jacobean Butterfly
These exotic butterflies and strawberries are aesthetically balanced among undulating and scrolling vines, revealing a distinctive Elizabethan influence. The most famous and prolific embroiderer in English history was Mary, Queen of Scots. Flowers, animals, and symbolic colors dominate her art, which she used to display her sense of wit and justice. She was rarely seen without a needle in her hand (but then she was imprisoned for 19 years, so what else could she do?).
