The word 'Orchid' is derived from the Greek god, Orchis, the son of a nymph and a satyr. Orchis committed a sin during the celebratory feast of Bacchus, and was punished by being torn to pieces by wild beasts. Where his blood fell, a slender and modest plant emerged. This design features a colorful variety of plants, along with the word 'Orchids.'

The ghost orchid became famous when Susan Orlean's book, The Orchid Thief, was published. The story surrounds the orchid-poaching actions of Floridian John Laroche, and Orlean's quest to find a ghost orchid. The book was later used as the basis for the Academy Award-nominated film, Adaptation.
