Birds are the Word

NEW THIS WEEK - January 25th, 2006:

Birds are the Word

People's fascination with birds is never ending. Eagles circle above, catching the updrafts, and we watch for hours, staring in wonderment. We feed the wild birds at our window sills and delight in their antics. And, we shower affection on birds who consent to become our pets, sharing our days and making us laugh with their colorful personalities.

This week's designs are all about those birds -- beautiful birds that have inspired folk art and cultural legends, wild birds who create lively drama in our own backyards, birds of prey that tantalize and mystify us, and quirky pals we take into our hearts.

Entertain in style with a serving tray that features your embroidery art.  Click for project instructions!

We begin with a peacock, bright and bold with color. You'll notice two versions - the first version has rings in the tail feathers where you can place heat-set crystals. Texture-lovers will enjoy the hen and rooster design, whose tail feathers can be turned into fringe.

Framed panels feature graceful and stately birds, including the Snowy Egret, Flamingo, African Grey Parrot, and Bird of Paradise. And, raptors in their natural settings soar from jacket backs; these large designs feature a Bald Eagle, Red-Tailed Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, and Great Horned Owl.

As winter lumbers on, we look forward to the sounds of birds that foretell spring -- the "cheer-up" song of the first returning robins and the loon's plaintive call over fog-shrouded lakes. Listen for the cardinal's whistle and blue bird and chickadee's sweet songs as you sew with these design sets-- including a corner nest, a feather, and a bird in flight -- made to coordinate on many a spring project.

May your embroidery machine fly like it had wings, and enjoy this week's designs!

Dazzling Crystal-tailed Peacock
The brightly colored peacock is a symbolic image in almost every land where it spread its grand tail. Since ancient times, those who saw the peacock's brilliant tail could not help but spin countless legends about the stars of heaven, royalty, and spiritual immortality.

Be a legend in your own time when you sew this magnificent peacock and add the crystals to its tail. Wonderful for the back of a jacket or any place you want a dramatic, eye-catching design. Looking for instructions for working with crystals? Click here!

Peacock
Reminiscent of folk art embroidery with a hint of Asian influence, this peacock design will make
a fantastic fashion statement on a jacket back, sizable tote, or framed piece. This design does
not have rings for satin placement; the "eyes" of the tail are filled in with stitches.
Available in two sizes:
10.97"X9.55" and 6.70"X5.87"

Panels of Favorite Feathered Friends
Snowy Egret
Framed in cattails from the marshlands where it forages for food and raises its young. The Snowy is a smaller egret, but makes up for it when he ruffles up new spring plumage in a mating display.
  Raggiana Bird of Paradise
Framed in bamboo, this popular and interesting bird, native of Southeast Asia, has spectacular plumage, trailing orange plumes, green chin, and yellow crown. Few would believe he is related to the common crow!

Available in two sizes:
5.50"X9.47" and 3.96"X6.85"
  Available in two sizes:
5.41"X9.41" and 3.95"X6.86"

African Grey Parrot
Also known as the red-tailed grey, these little parrots are said to be the perfect mix of brains and beauty. A favorite as pets, many of them can learn to mimic almost any sound in the home and are known to build a vocabulary of as many as 2,000 words. Watch what you say!
  Flamingo
When people see a real flamingos for the first time, they often stare in amazement. Yes, they really are pink -- with black trim, on their flight feathers. They are found in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and South America. Although these wading birds usually nest in tropical areas, flamingo colonies have been observed high in the Andes mountains.

Fun with Fringe
Add a distinct tactile flair to a popular kitchen pair -- the rooster and hen. Designs, digitized with long satin stitches, anchored with shorter anchor stitches, can be cut and fluffed. This is a special effect that adds a delightful dimension. For a free video tutorial for making fringe, click here!

Parrots ( psittacidae) as Pets
People have been domesticating members of the parrot family for centuries. They are fascinating birds! Not just colorful, they also are intelligent, social, and they live long lives. More than 340 species of parrots (this includes, macaws, cockatoos, parrots, budgies, parakeets, etc.) live in the wild in American, Asian, African, and Oceana tropics. And, although their vocal abilities are by no means melodious, many are quite adept at mimicry.

Harlequin Macaw
Not to be found in the wild, the Harlequin is the result of crossbreeding. The Green Wing Macaw and Blue and Gold Macaw, both good-tempered birds, give their best genes to the Harlequin, who is intelligent, affectionate, and a bit mischievous.
  Military Macaw
Found in the wild from Mexico to South American this little macaw has a vivacious personality. The Military Macaw is known to swing audaciously from one toenail. He loves to play in wide-open spaces, so he's happiest in a large cage with a swing and room to flap his wings.

Majestic raptors
Mysterious birds of prey, sailing in the sky on updrafts of air or diving from the heights, excite our imaginations. Human beings, since time began, have admired the eagle's power, the owl's piercing vision, the falcon's speed, and we've adopted their images and their distinctive features as symbols for human aspirations. The raptors are magnificent, and their images make magnificent embroidery.

Please note that some of these designs are quite large, and may be larger than your hoop.
If a design is larger than your hoop, then you will need to split the design into smaller pieces
and rehoop the fabric. If you'd like more information on splitting designs, click here.

Great Horned Owl
This composite design depicts the portrait of an owl in its natural habitat at the edge of woods bordering open fields or agricultural areas. The "horns" of this largest North American owl are tufts of feathers, and his face is dominated by large bright yellow eyes. He has very sharp talons and a strong beak. A very adaptable bird, the great horned owl ranges from Alaska to the tip of South America, and nests in everything from tree and cactus cavities to old squirrel and hawk nests to cliff edges.
Available in two sizes:
10.19"X10.00" and 6.00"X5.87"

Bald Eagle
This composite design features the bald eagle, winging high aloft its natural habitat of a river bed. Eagles live near open water areas abundant with the waterfowl and fish they eat. They are four years old before they acquire the characteristic white head and yellow beak. Their extremely large nests, six feet in diameter, can literally weigh a ton. Formerly found across all of North America, today this endangered American symbol is now confined mostly to Alaska, Canada, the northern Great Lakes, Florida, and the Pacific Northwest.
Available in two sizes:
13.01"X8.81" and 8.63"X5.86"

Red-tailed Hawk
Easy to spot along Upper Midwest highways and byways, the red-tailed hawk perches atop utility poles and dead tree limbs at the edge of woodlands, where he has a clear vantage point for spotting prey in meadows or farmland below. The red-tail ranges from central Alaska south through the entire United States to Mexico and Central America. A large hawk weighing two to four pounds, the adults have a reddish-colored tail, light chest and underside plumage, with cinnamon markings on the neck.
Available in two sizes:
9.99"X9.27" and 6.29"X5.83"

Peregrine Falcon
The peregrine (wandering) falcon can be found in almost every climate worldwide, on every continent except Antarctica. It likes open spaces, high cliffs, and bluffs overlooking rivers and coastlines. A spectacular hunter, it dives at high speed, catching much of its prey in mid-air. Although still bred for reintroduction into the wild, they were removed from the endangered species list in 1999. Accustomed to nesting high on mountain crags and bluffs, pairs of falcons have been successfully introduced into cities, where they make their nests on tall buildings.
Available in two sizes:
9.97"X9.27" and 6.27"X5.84"

Birds of a feather flock together!
To give you that creative edge when you want to coordinate some special linens or an outfit for your favorite birder, these designs are more than a flight of fancy. Sew a feather on a hat to go with a pair of birds nesting on a sweater's shoulder or winging their way above a pocket; decorate the corners of placemats or towels and add a feather border for extra panache; frame a bird in flight with a grouping of its wing feathers; the possibilities are endless!
