Contest Winners!

Last November and December the Embroidery Library held a Christmas contest, where we drew names of shoppers and awarded them gift certificates.  Along with a gift certificate, each winner had the opportunity to become an art director for a day.  Winners were invited to suggest specific ideas for new designs, and helped shape this week's new design presentation.

We drew names of embroiderers from around the world, with a variety of tastes, and as a result, you'll find an incredible assortment this week.  From cool cats to gardening ladybugs to tiki statues to Native American dreamcatchers, our winners displayed an incredible amount of creative energy.

Many thanks to everyone who participated in our contest, and congratulations to the winners!

When Lana from Texas isn't working in her sewing room, she's busy in the garden, working with the ladybugs.  These busy bugs would be great on totes and shirts.
Lana says that her ladybugs have a special fondness for tomato plants.

Paula from Oklahoma is a self-proclaimed bird lover, and wanted
to see a blue jay added to our bird collection.  She recommended
that the bird be perched on a pine branch, and the bird's beautiful
blue feathers contrast beautifully with the dark green needles.

Blue Jay

Available in two sizes:
5.81"X6.29" and 3.53"X3.84"

Deb from Washington state had an idea for a cool cat with sunglasses.
In a lime green blazer and dark shades, this creature is one cool cat.

Cool Cat

Naomi's winter home is in Arizona, but her summer home is near the Wisconsin Dells.  As a result, she appreciates the Native American influences in both the Southwest and the Midwest.  Naomi was searching for a Native American woman design, with flowing black hair and turquoise beads.  This nighttime scene
is framed in a dream catcher.

Dream Catcher

Available in two sizes:
8.00"X10.33" and 5.84"X7.53"

Brenda from Plain City, Utah, asked for a leopard appy horse
with feathers in his mane and handprints.  We added heart-lines, too.
Thanks, Brenda - great idea!

Mary in South Carolina has a daughter and almost-son-in-law who are passionate about ceramics and tiki-style art.  Mary sent in photos of some figures that her daughter and almost-son-in-law made, and they were gorgeous!

Tiki

Available in two sizes:
4.82"X6.80" and 2.75"X3.85"

Mary will be using these embroidery designs to sew tiki-embellished items
for her daughter's home.  It will be such a great treat for them to have embroidered
designs of figures that they have actually made!

Tiki

Available in two sizes:
4.48"X6.83" and 2.55"X3.87"

The tiki craze began in 1934, when Don Beach opened a Polynesian-themed restaurant in Hollywood, California.  Don decorated his restaurant with bamboo, rattan, exotic fabrics, and lit torches.  Soon thereafter, Walt Disney established
his "Tiki Room," and visitors to Disneyland got a taste of the South Pacific in
the form of talking birds and Polynesian decor.

Tiki

Available in two sizes:
4.85"X6.53" and 2.83"X3.85"

Cindi from Louisville, Kentucky, enjoyed the Snowman series that we did a few weeks
back.  She requested a snowman dressed like a police officer, or a fire-fighter.  Some
of her family members work in these fields, so Cindi will be able to make wonderful
personalized gifts for her loved ones.

Nancy from Palm Harbor, Florida, had a vision of brightly-
colored crewel flowers sewn against a dark denim jacket.

Available in two sizes:
4.89"X6.13" and 3.15"X3.89"

Crewel embroidery has its roots in ancient Greece and Rome, when members of
the warring class embellished their uniforms with wool.  The word 'crewel' is
actually a Welsh word that means 'wool.'

crewel flower

Available in two sizes:
4.85"X6.72" and 2.79"X3.87"

Early on, crewel embroidery consisted of two-ply yarn, applied to lightweight
fabrics such as silk and linen.  The result was a beautifully textured fabric, with
the high-pile of the yarn contrasting with the delicate fabrics.

crewel flower

Available in two sizes:
5.15"X4.87" and 3.86"X3.65"

As well as resulting in beautiful decorations and clothing, crewel had another
benefit:  It added a layer of insulation to stone houses and drafty castles.

Available in two sizes:
4.87"X4.86" and 3.85"X3.85"

Paula from Oklahoma loves the beautiful rock formations in Monument Valley,
on the Utah and Arizona border.  This design features the East and West Mitten
Buttes in Monument Valley.

Monument Valley

Available in two sizes:
9.40"X5.88" and 6.80"X4.24"

Paula requested that the design be drawn at either sunrise or sunset.  We digitized a non-descript sun that could easily be turned into a moon with just a few variations of
thread colors.  For the night scene, we used darker shades of brown for the buttes,
and blues and purples for the sky.  The color change sheet provides the colors for
both day and night versions of this design.

Monument Valley

Sarah requested designs that she could use for an Easter banner for her
church.  This design features a sunrise, and the words "He Is Risen."

He is Risen

Available in two sizes:
15.20"X5.76" and 9.41"X3.58"

A large cross and lilies, appropriate for an Easter service.

Cross & Lilies

Available in two sizes:
5.22"X9.41" and 3.82"X6.85"

A young lamb rests among lilies.

Lamb & Lilies

Available in two sizes:
7.01"X5.89" and 5.75"X4.82"

Please check the size of the designs before you purchase them.  If you are going
to split the design, then choose the size appropriate for your project.  If you want to
sew the design without editing or splitting,  be sure that the design's dimensions
are not larger than your hoop's sewing field.
