Error Messages in PE Design

PE Design (or PED-Basic) and Palettes are programs that many Brother and BabyLock users have. These programs are used to view designs on the computer and write designs to embroidery cards. Like any program, they have limitations -- specifically size and stitch count limitations. These are some error messages/ symbols that you may encounter with Palette or PE Design when working with larger, more complex designs:

A symbol of a square (hoop or card) with a line through it:

This symbol means that the design cannot be written to an embroidery card. Usually this occurs if the design has more stitches than what a card can hold.

Embroidery cards can generally hold between 28,000 and 50,000 stitches. Most versions of Palette are limited to 50,000 stitches.

Find out how many stitches your card can hold, or your program can read. Then, compare that number to the number of stitches in the design (you can always find that information by checking the design's color change sheet). Does the design have more stitches than what the card can hold? If yes, then you will need to split the design by stitch count. Instructions are here.

If the design does not have more stitches than what your card can hold, then send an email to stitch@emblibrary.com. Include your order number, the name of the design, and the type of machine you have. Include all of this information.

Cannot Read File Version/No Sewing Data

This error message occurs when PE Design or Palette tries to open a large design. Most versions of PE Design and Palette are limited to a 5 x 7 inch design. If you try to open a design that is larger than that -- even a design that is 5.5 x 5.5 inches -- you will get the "cannot open file version" or "no sewing data" message.

Compare the size of the design to the size that your machine can stitch. Is the design larger than 5 x 7, but still fits in your machine's sewing area? If so, then skip the card writer, and upload the design to your machine with a different method (flash drive, thumb drive, USB cable, etc.).

If your machine can only accept embroidery cards, then we will see if a smaller size is available.  If there is a smaller size of the design available, we will switch to that size for you at no charge.

If you need a smaller size of a design, send an email to stitch@emblibrary.com. Include your order number, the name of the design, and the type of machine you have. Include all of this information.

Then, visit your profile at the website. Make sure that your machine's correct stitching area is entered there. If the correct size is listed there, the website will issue warnings in your shopping basket when you select a design that is larger than what your machine can stitch.

If a smaller size of the design is not available, then you will need to split the design by size and stitch it in multiple hoopings. Embird from www.Embird.com is a great program for editing and splitting designs. You can also have someone split the design for you. One professional editor that we recommend is Marian Ecker. Her website is www.MurphysDesigns.com. For more information about splitting, click here.
