First, we will prepare the pattern for the napkin. Draw a 20 inch horizontal line on the paper or tag board leaving about 12 inches of space below the line and a couple of inches above the line. Then, mark the center point of the line by measuring and dividing by two.
Position one side of the compass on the center point of the horizontal line and hold it in place with one hand. With your other hand, swing the other end of the compass under the horizontal line, drawing a curved line that connects the ends of the horizontal line - this creates the semi-circle shape.
Cut out the shape and the pattern piece is ready!
Pin the pattern piece on the linen fabric and trace the shape - leave about 3 inches of excess fabric around the shape.
Remove the pattern piece. Using an air-erase pen (or other marking tool), measure and mark 7 1/2 inches in along the top line starting at the top left corner.
Measure and mark (in a straight line) 6 inches down along the left curved edge starting at the top left corner.
Draw a line connecting the two marks. The area from the line you just drew and the top left corner is the embroidered area for the top section of the napkin.
Measure and mark (in a straight line) 9 1/2 inches along the right side curve starting at the top right corner. Then, measure and mark 9 inches along the bottom of the curve starting at the mark you just made along the right side curve.
Draw a line connecting the right side mark and the top mark (the mark where the first line connects). Then, measure and mark 3 1/2 inches along the line you just drew starting at the bottom of the curve.
Draw a line connecting the mark you just made and the bottom curve mark. The triangular area at the bottom curve is the embroidered area for the middle section of the napkin.
Create paper templates of the designs by printing them at full size using embroidery software. If you don't have embroidery software, you can cut a piece of paper the shape and dimensions of the designs to help with placement and centering. Position the templates with the vertical axis lines parallel to the lines that connect on the top of the shape and with at least 1/2 inch of space between the outer edges of the designs and the edges of the embroidered areas. Poke holes in the center of each template and mark the fabric. Also, mark the horizontal and vertical axis lines.
Remove the templates and draw lines to connect the axis marks. These lines will be used for hooping.
Spray a piece of medium weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric. Attach the hoop to the machine and load the first design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric and embroider the design. When the first design has finished, re-hoop the fabric for the second design and embroider that one as well.
When all the designs have finished, trim away the excess stabilizer from the back of the embroidery.
Cut out the shape.
To prepare the fabric for the back of the napkin, lay the embroidered front panel on top of the print cotton fabric, pin in place, and cut around the shape.
Remove the pins and the back fabric piece. Add the rickrack along the curved edge of the front piece. Position the rickrack inside the shape so that the outer edge is aligned with the outer edge of the fabric - pin in place.
Sew a 1/8 inch seam along the curved edge of the fabric tacking the rickrack in place.
Lay the embroidered front piece flat with the right side up. Then, align the back fabric piece on top with the right sides facing. Pin in place and sew a 1/4 inch seam along the curved edge and most of the top edge - leave about 4 inches on the top edge open for turning.
Turn the napkin right side out and press the seams with an iron. Also, turn the opening in 1/4 inch and press. Top stitch a 1/4 inch seam around the entire outer edge of the napkin.
To fold the napkin, fold the top section over to the backside along the line and press.
Next, accordion fold the remaining sections together with the side edges aligned and press.
Add your Christmas tree napkins to any place setting for a fun festive touch!
