Beautify a belt with freestanding lace

Accessories are often what make a special outfit shine.  This belt is no exception!  Bright pink ribbon and delicate lace make it an all-girl statement, while the brass rings give it a retro flair.

Supplies needed:

  • Ribbon -- twice your waist measurement plus 14 inches -- 1-1/2 inches wide

  • 2 brass rings -- 2-1/2 inches in diameter

  • Water-soluble stabilizer(WSS) -- I used Ultra Solvy

Embroidery designs from Embroidery Library:

  • Freestanding lace flower accessory

Instructions:
Fold the ribbon in half, and mark center points on one half where you will be embroidering the freestanding lace.  Leave at least 3 inches from the fold and 8 inches from the cut end that will not be embroidered. I marked 4 center points along one half of the ribbon.

Hoop the marked ribbon with one layer of heavy water- soluble stabilizer.

Snap your hoop into your machine and center your needle over the center point that you marked on the ribbon. Embroider out the lace design. The designs are intentionally wider than the ribbon, so expect the edges to "fall off" the edges of the ribbon.

Repeat for all the spots that you marked along the ribbon.

Trim away the excess stabilizer when you are finished embroidering.

Fold the ribbon in half again, with the wrong sides together, and bring the 2 brass rings between the two layers of the ribbon; one layer of ribbon should go through the rings.

Line up the edges of the ribbons, and stitch a row of satin stitches 1 inch from the fold, and through both layers of ribbon, to keep the rings in place.

Use a straight stitch to sew the edges of the ribbons together along  both long sides. Turn the ends of the ribbon under at the end, and stitch down.  Soak the belt or launder to remove the WSS.

To "buckle" the belt, Bring the end through both rings, then over the first ring, and under the second ring.  Pull the ribbon tight, and the belt stays secure with friction.
