We used medallions from the Stained Glass Christmas Wreaths and Poinsettias design packs for our candle mat. Here are a couple more medallion designs that would also look stunning: Stained Glass Doves, Stained Glass Candles, and Stained Glass Angels.

Finished Size:
14 1/2 inches wide by 14 1/2 inches tall

Special Notes:
For safety, be sure to place a flame-resistant base under the candle -- glass or stone bases are great options. Or, use a battery operated candle!

First we will prepare the fabric for the embroidery. Cut a piece of wool felt 9 inches by 9 inches. Place a 7 inch in diameter round object on the felt and trace the shape.

Create a paper template of the design by printing it at full size using embroidery software. If you don't have embroidery software, you can cut a piece of paper the shape and dimensions of the design to help with placement and centering. If you'd like a recommendation for an embroidery program that can make templates, consider Embird from www.Embird.com.

Place the template within the shape, with the bottom edge of the design one inch from the bottom edge of the circle. The top edge of the design should be about 2 inches from the top edge of the shape. Center the template side-to-side by measuring and equal distances between the side edges of the design and the side edges of the shape. Using an air-erase pen (or other marking tool), poke a hole in the center of the template and mark the fabric. Also, mark the horizontal and vertical axis points.

Remove the template and draw lines to connect the marks -- extend the lines out to the edges of the shape.

Spray a piece of medium-weight cutaway stabilizer with temporary adhesive and smooth the fabric on top. Hoop the fabric and stabilizer together by aligning the marks on the hoop with the lines on the fabric.

Attach the hoop to the machine and load the first design. Move the hoop so that the needle is directly over the center point on the fabric. Embroider the design.

When the design has finished, cut out the shape -- we left the stabilizer on the back of the embroidery.

Repeat this process for a total of 4 circle shapes.

To prepare the fabric for the ornament shapes, trace an object that is 3 inches in diameter onto the fabric, and cut out the shape.

Repeat this process for a total of 4 ornament shapes.

To prepare the fabric for the tops of the ornaments, measure and mark four 3/4 inch wide by 1/2 inch high rectangles on the fabric, and cut out the shapes.

Now that all the pieces have been cut, it is time to assemble the mat. First, lay two of the embroidered circles onto the back fabric, opposite one another, with the top edges facing. Using a straight edge, align the vertical axis lines on the circles leaving 1 1/4 inch between the top edges of the circles. Pin the circles in place -- leave a couple of inches of excess fabric around the outer edges of the circles.

Overlap the remaining embroidered circles, opposite the first two circles, align them with the straight edge, and pin them in place just as you did with the first two circles. Be sure to leave 1 1/4 inch of space between the top edges of the circles.

Trace the inner and outer edges of the circles onto the fabric. Mark the axis lines onto the fabric -- these marks will be used for placing the circles back onto the fabric later on.

Number each circle on the underside, and also on the outer fabric around each circle.

Remove the circles and add fusible web to the back of the each circle.

Return each circle to the fabric, one at a time, matching the numbers and axis marks. Overlap each circle as you go.

Using a pressing cloth, press the circles in place -- follow the instructions on the fusible web packaging.

Add fusible web to the back of each ornament piece, and place them in between each of the embroidered circles. Position the top edges of the pieces 3 inches from the "points" of the square shape in the center. Also, position the shapes side-to-side by measuring equal distances between the side edges of the shapes and the side edges of the embroidered circles. Using a pressing cloth, press the shapes in place.

Trim the fabric around the entire outer edge of each circle and ornament shape.

Using a zig-zag stitch, stitch around the entire outer edge of each shape.

Cut four 3-inch lengths of decorative cord. Add a drop of fabric glue to one end of each piece of cord to prevent them from fraying. Then, add a couple of drops of fabric glue to the ornament top fabric pieces, and place the raw end of the cords onto the fabric.

Place the fabric/cord pieces, wrong side down, at the top of each of the ornament shapes and press in place.

Add fabric glue to the back of the cord, bend the cord into a hook shape, and press the cord in place.

Your shiny new candle mat is complete!
