Fabrics 101: Embroidering on Sweatshirts

Cozy, comfy sweatshirts are a must-have for any wardrobe -- and personally picked embroidery adds a unique, stylish touch.

Make your embroidered sweatshirts picture-perfect -- and avoid puckering and shifting -- with the right stabilizer choice, and a good hooping method!

First, pre-wash the sweatshirt according to label instructions.

Then, determine where you want to place the design. If you have embroidery software, print a template of the design, and arrange it on the sweatshirt until you get the placement just right.

Perfect placement is determined mainly by your personal preference, but if you'd like a free chart that shows traditional placement, click here.

After you have the template positioned where you'd like it to be, mark the horizontal and vertical points on each side of the design. Also, mark the design's center point.

You can mark placement with masking tape and a pen, or an air-erase marker.

Use a ruler to line up the two horizontal points, and draw a line straight through the center point.  Repeat this for the vertical points.

These marks will be used to line up the sweatshirt in the hoop, and also to make sure the design begins in the right spot.

Some sweatshirts are 100% cotton, some have a polyester or spandex blend.

Whatever the component of your sweatshirt, use a cutaway stabilizer. Sweatshirt material is pretty stretchy, so it's best to use a cutaway stabilizer to make sure that the stitches lay exactly where they're supposed to be.

Spray a piece of cutaway stabilizer with spray adhesive.

Turn the sweatshirt inside-out and smooth the stabilizer onto the backside of the area that will be embroidered.

Turn the sweatshirt right side out, then slide the inner hoop inside the shirt.

Place the top hoop on top of the sweatshirt, and line up the marks on the shirt with the marks in the hoop. Then, press the top hoop firmly into place.

Attach the hoop to the machine, and roll the excess sweatshirt up and out of the way. You can use chip clips or hair clips to keep the excess shirt material free and clear of the hoop.

Load the design into the machine, and move the hoop so that the needle is right over that marked center point.

Embroider the design. Because we're using cutaway stabilizer, all of the stitches are going to line up perfectly. And because the fabric is hooped with the stabilizer, there will be no puckering, no design sections misaligned -- picture-perfect results.

After the design has finished embroidering, trim the stabilizer from the backside of the shirt.

And there you have it! A cozy, cuddly sweatshirt to keep you warm -- and fashionable! -- throughout the autumn and the winter.

Some embroiderers hoop the stabilizer only, and place the sweatshirt on top of the stabilizer. But we've found that there's a significant difference in quality when this method is used. We embroidered the same design on another sweatshirt, but this time we hooped sticky stabilizer only, and laid the sweatshirt on top.

Take a a look at the results when the fabric isn't hooped with the stabilizer:

The two sweatshirts are side by side. The design on the sweatshirt that wasn't hooped is "shifting" -- note how there's a gap in the hat area. Also, you can see that there are bits of blue sweatshirt peeking through the main hat area. With the sewout on the left, the one that was hooped, there's no gapping, and excellent coverage, no sweatshirt material peeking through.

There's also gapping and separation between the stripes of the snowman's hat.

This shifting and gapping occurs because the fabric isn't hooped with the stabilizer. When hooping the stabilizer only, the bottom of the fabric is held firm, but the top wiggles around a little with the movement of the hoop. That means that the stitches aren't landing where they should be, and gapping/separation occurs.

Also, notice how the sweatshirt that wasn't hooped is puckering. When stitches are laid into the fabric, the fabric contracts underneath the weight and tension of the stitches. If the fabric is hooped along with the stabilizer, then the hoop keeps the fabric from contracting, and your sewouts will be free of puckering.

For the best-quality results, hoop the fabric with the stabilizer as often as possible. Enjoy cuddling up with your picture-perfect sweatshirts!
